Working at S2 has been nothing short of a wonderful experience. Everyone here really cares about the work that they do as well as the team members that surround them. The leadership team really shows their appreciation to their team members in more ways than one, from fun cultural events to transparent conversations, to continued support in furthering careers. As a small agency there are a lot of changes that occur throughout the year however, this past year we have seemed to really find our stride. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 770524 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 4.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Square 2 Marketing

private:square2marketing https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=770524 Jan 27th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Square 2 Marketing Former Employee Steer clear unless you're fresh out of school and looking for experience In full transparency, Square 2 has just gone through a huge wave of layoffs and "restructuring", and I was one of the employees affected. This is still very much the review I would've written had I left on my own down the line, but it's an important disclosure. There are two main pros to working at Square 2: 1.) There's real work to be done. You'll be exposed to project management, marketing and consulting strategy; you'll also learn to use tools like HubSpot and Salesforce which have been growing in prominence in the space and are likely to be in-demand for at least the next few years. So if you’re in the initial stages of your career, you’ll certainly get some experience. 2.) Many of your coworkers are great people who know their stuff. As with any work environment, especially an agency, there’ll be plenty of whiffs, but many folks are knowledgeable, agreeable, and willing to help out. There are plenty of cons, but the big ones start with leadership and trickle down. Namely, the company is run by a group of folks lacking ambition and general know-how. Decision makers at the top are walking exhibitions of the Dunning-Kruger effect, and they constantly ping-pong between coming up with their own “great” ideas, and realizing those ideas hold zero water or are unattainable under their agency model, and then leeching off whatever other folks in their business circles are spouting off in any given moment. This brings us to the second big point, which is that the marketing agency business model has been dead and rotting in the sun for half a decade, and the folks at the top still haven’t caught the scent, let alone spotted the carcass. Automation tools and the widespread dissemination of information have made 90% of agency services worthless, and it’s only because the people in marketing and sales department on internal teams are nearly as slow on the uptake that agencies are still getting any businesses. The few that thrive do so because they have real, in-depth expertise and technical and strategic talent, something Square 2 sorely lacks. Square 2’s pattern of hiring and firing year in and year out will continue until they finally realize they’ve been staying afloat on a sinking boat labeled “Middleman” that’s due to fully sink any day now. Do yourself a favor: avoid agencies, whether as an employee or a customer, and especially avoid this one. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 8.0 2.0 3.0 2.0 2.0 4.0 1.0 770524 Open The agency model is dead; but if you're really as innovative as you think you are, take some time to think through what's caused you to lay so many people off (plenty of other industries experience cyclical sales without having to resort to drastic measures) and fix it. Don't be so eager to be seen as the smartest people in the room. You can still make a ton of money by being humble enough to recognize that others have better ideas and are far more talented, and letting them execute accordingly for *your* firm. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 1.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Square 2 Marketing

private:square2marketing https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=770524 Feb 4th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Square 2 Marketing Manager Growth and Possibility I have worked at Square 2 for a few years. When I first came, it was a pretty small shop. As a result of having that small, tight team transparency was a highly valued virtue. It still is as the company nears 50 team members. It's been a pleasure to watch this company grow, and I have grown right along with it. There have been a few challenges along the way, that's pretty normal. But what's refreshing is how we work together as a team, where everyone's input has value, and we work to address any challenges that come our way. It's so wonderful to work with a smart, creative, collaborative group of people. When you strive to be innovative, to push the envelope, there is going to be a lot of change. Change can be good, too much change can be disruptive. Square 2 has to pace out its need for change with people’s ability to master new process and methodology. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 0.0 4.0 4.0 0.0 770524 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 6.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Apr 22nd, 2021 06:41PM Square 2 Marketing

private:square2marketing https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=770524 Dec 3rd, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Square 2 Marketing High hopes that faded into the abyss Square 2 Marketing is very process oriented. If you’re a junior marketer and you need structure and want to cut your teeth at an agency, this is a great place to start. You will outgrow it however, very quickly if you like to color outside the lines at all. Given the small size of the company, they’ve done a solid job setting up HR processes, like quarterly reviews and annual raises. While unlimited vacation is a nice selling point (available after you’ve been employed for one year), the fine print is you can only take 10 consecutive days off. The 401K matching is a nice perk as well. From my own personal count, since September 2016, there have been 32 people that have left the agency. Roughly 45% were fired or “laid off” and 55% resigned. That’s not an awesome track record for any company that is only 45-50 in size to start. Turnover of at least one person per month for 2.5 years is exceptionally high, even for an agency. The result is that the environment is chaotic and employee moral suffers. They’ve acquired at least three companies in the last 3-5 years. There is no one left from at least one acquisition and there is only one person left from one a few years ago. Another red flag is the disconnect between the founders, leadership and management teams. The founders are looking to build a large agency for their own egos on the backs of their management team, who is so burned out they can’t manage the rest of the team effectively. Buying agencies and trying to integrate the people into the existing team is tough for everyone. It’s a money play for the founders – they want to show a large revenue number so they can ultimately sell the agency. The company focuses on SMBs. Mostly on the S side of SMB. With a lot of clients, you’ll be working directly with owners of small businesses that know nothing about marketing and were sold on services by a founder who promises the moon when they can only afford a fraction of a star. It’s often an uphill battle from the start of an engagement. I’d ask about client turnover in addition to human resource turnover if you’re seriously considering a job here. Finally, despite their desire to show a broad range of services, they don’t have the understanding, expertise or client base to succeed. They are solely inbound focused and they can’t seem to get off that hamster wheel. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL -1.0 DISAPPROVE 7.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 770524 Open Look at your data. Can you really have an effective and cohesive team with such a high turnover rate? Is your HR dept adding value and a strategic part of the team? How is the acquisition “strategy” working out? They might want to review the definition of insanity. Owners need to get out of the day to day management of the company, or fire half the managers and actually do the job full-time so they understand what needs to be done and can have some empathy for what the team deals with day in and day out (and they’d increase their abysmal profit margin). 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "Co-founder, President and Chief Inbound ScientistPresident ", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 1929942, "responseDateTime": "2019-01-07T07:49:09.667", "translationMethod": null, "response": "Thank you for your input.
