Mostly fun, kind people who want to do creative and meaningful work.
The agency attracts a mix of purposeful, mission-driven work and more lucrative, corporate clients (without fully selling the agency's soul).
Semi-flexible work environment.
|
More ego than vision.
They hire people with content knowledge but no agency experience and expect them to adapt immediately with no onboarding. This is compounded by a lack of clear process.
Bloated management.

Good people, future uncertain

The hours and vacation policy are great. The company is small so you get to know everyone right away. It is the opposite of a cutthroat environment, everyone is supportive.
|
There are many in management who can't really delegate so the work goes through the ringer of differing opinions before going to the client. You have a lot of projects that tend to fizzle out before anything gets made, or they become much smaller. The people really are great, but the downside to being at a small shop is that it can be hard if you don't fit in. There are still cliques that leave people feeling left out. There can also be a lot of drama/yelling, most of it unnecessary. No project management or planning departments.

great place to start

|
as a copywriter intern right out of college, SSK was a great place to dive into a lot of different types of work. Worked directly under the CCO, who has tons of experience in the industry and is a wizard in many ways. Seemingly a great place for mid-level and senior creatives to come in and make immediate impact.
|
creative department is very thin right now - virtually no one above the junior level besides the CCO, who has to preside over every piece of business and doesn't have many people to delegate to. The office space itself is a little weird - the floor is split between SSK and a few other strategy/research/programming companies under the M&C Saatchi label.

Amazing People, Management Struggles

SS+K has clients that matter, like Planned Parenthood and Emily's List. You get to make an impact through your work and it can feel like a liberal paradise. The people are really amazing.
|
No process. 7 partners make it hard for the simplest decision to be made. A lot of great ideas get killed because of too much partner micro-management.

Gives interns a decent amount of responsibility, take the work they do very seriously, work with variety of clients, overall good place to get introduction into world of marketing, communications, etc. (in its both interesting and dreadful aspects)

Pretty scattered in terms of assignments. A lot of "here, do this!"--could make it hard to feel like you were really working towards something or knew what to expect on a day-to-day basis.
A lot also depends on what team/client you are working with. I personally felt really disconnected from my team and never ended up getting an official onboarding process. Made it feel like my work was unrecognized and didn't matter much. This was enhanced by everyone seeming so busy that they didn't have time to even answer a simple question.
Also, they could have paid way more for a fancy advertising place in NYC that regularly goes out to expensive lunches.
