The location is hip and the office nice, however the neighborhood as a whole is so-so, depending on your take on Venice culture as a whole. Super stocked fridge, kegerator, and the HR/Office staff really do strive to make a great, welcoming space. There were some fun events too, and hosted some good meetups. Props to them. The place is just filled with talented, laid back people that I enjoyed being around and collaborating with on a regular basis. Everyone knows everyone and what they do. When I was there, the dev team was great and keyed in, super productive for how bad the codebase was. I worked at Stack for over a year, and the biggest issue is the lack of a Technical Co-Founder (Or balance). At minimum, there should be a founder that understands development and developer culture. I and many other developers don't feel their contributions are valued in any way other than a tick mark on a feature sheet. Because of this lack of knowledge and respect, the dev team is a turnstile of both contract and permanent developers. They brand themselves as a Technology company, when the tech is more of a means to an end of augmenting a mediocre platform, than a core business value. The CEO is very in the weeds, commonly fancying himself a designer, a dev, a marketer, instead of living at 30,000 feet and promoting vision and delegating to people who are much more savvy in those areas. How do you resolve a problem when the problem is the one and only founder? It's an Emperors New Clothes situation The benefits look good on paper, but when you try to leverage them, you get guilt tripped for it or you have to really fight to get them. It's going to become harder and harder to recruit quality people. private:stackcommerce-3 https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=714514 Dec 31st, 2015 12:00AM Open Open StackSocial Software Engineer Venice, CA Beautilful office and good for new grads; Obsolete business model and an uninspiring CEO - Beautiful beachfront location puts you in the thick of it all while being tucked just enough away to focus - Good for those starting out in their career (but know when to move on) - Kitchen always stocked - Great HR staff and sociable and intelligent employees who have fun with what they do despite management - Stereotypical CEO with a business degree, a few CS classes, and no understanding of the mental and social maturity it takes to be in that position as a leader who should inspire - Project managers have their hands tied as seniority is akin to a helicopter parent with little trust given to their employees to make things happen and often stifle momentum and induce needless frustration - The business model only works best by taking advantage of an uninformed consumer, and if you aren't ok with that, you are not welcome - Terrible/nonexistent security protocols paired with an unwillingness to address it - Toxic environment that caters to a fraternity mindset and heavily discourages a hacker attitude towards problems -The engineering managers (which left the company long after I left) fostered an environment that was toxic both to women and those who didn't agree with their mindset. They made it uncomfortable for those who saw this play out on a daily basis as well as new employees who caught on quickly but were too worried to say anything. Sadly, this and other things remained a pink elephant and nothing was done to address it despite complaints and employee exits. - It no longer feels like a startup, but rather, a maintenance job solely to keep the existing business model afloat indefinitely with bandaids, support, and updated content -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL -1.0 DISAPPROVE 6.0 2.0 4.0 2.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 714514 Open Take some notes from Ed Catmull's Creativity Inc. and learn how to manage your company by earning the respect of others, not demanding it. private:stackcommerce-3 https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=714514 Dec 29th, 2015 12:00AM Open Open StackSocial Director Crisis of leadership + untenable business model = great place for amateurs If you just graduated or have little experience, Stack is great: fun location, decent office (no Snapchat or Google mind you), and a pretty laid back vibe, even if you're grinding on the most mundane stuff every day. Once you've learned what you can (assuming you have little experience), there's nowhere to go. Anyone seasoned should be looking elsewhere. Things like unlimited PTO and flexible hours are promoted, but in reality you're expected to be around until 7pm most nights, so if you have a family you definitely don't want to be there. The worst part is the business model is terrible and has no legs—they almost exclusively sell B- and C-rated gear from China, resell generally poor courses from Udemy, and seldom have any deals you'd actually want to be buying yourself.
