The people at StarChefs are wonderful, and it's great to know the work you do supports an industry of wonderful people (hospitality industry). The travel is fun too.

Compared to most other companies, their vacation policy is minimal. They don't pay much (small company with a small team and not a huge amount of revenue). They have no WFH policy.

Rife with fatal management problems

There are a lot of great employees here. Many positions include a lot of travel, hanging out with chefs, and eating at great restaurants. The workplace is casual and there is a lot of freedom with certain things.
|
The management here is so bad I don't think it can ever be fixed. Employees are chronically overworked and underpaid. There's a lot of screaming and talking over each other. Meetings are dreadful. The workplace is often tense and overall the conduct of management is extremely unprofessional. Benefits and pay are a joke--there seems to be an alarming lack of funding in every aspect of the operation. Since the staff overhauls every six months or so there is a constant scramble to pick up the pieces and nothing ever really gets finished.

Small company with an entrepreneurial spirit. Young, hard-working, committed staff. The company has an open, happily dysfunctional culture which might not be for everybody. Contract work is great for self-starters who don't mind jumping in and figuring out what needs to get done without hand-holding.

Amazing Team, literally the greatest group I've ever worked with. The actual work is fantastic as well.

Insanely chaotic management. Having to manage my managers is not something I want to do. Having to constantly remind them to do their job, while occasionally being spoken down to in a completely disrespectful and inappropriate way to speak to staff. No surprise turnover is as high as it is.

This company exploits, manipulates and takes advantage of the very same people they claim to be supporting. The CEO is notorious and company garners very little respect within the culinary world.
Disingenuous and outright false claims are shared with prospective hires, sponsors, chefs and hotels in order to lure them in.
The “magazine” has ZERO readership/ circulation. It is only handed out for free by StarChefs staff. Almost all web traffic is accidental.
There is horrendous leadership and organization at the management level that permeates throughout the company, leaving all employees stressed, overworked, forced to meet unrealistic expectations and turn out mediocre product.
Company culture coming directly from the CEO is abusive, explosive and over-the-top inappropriate, leading to incredibly high turnover.
Leadership lacks vision

Hostile work environment
No room for growth within the company
Low salary
Little to no room for salary increase

The editorial team is great. They understand camaraderie and really push to create exciting, compelling content for both the team and the industry. The events are fantastic and totally worth the struggle it sometimes takes to get to them.

Organization is lacking. There are some definite challenges with upper management–if you don't mind overhearing arguments (i.e. non-sensical rants) on the daily, then it won't be too challenging for you. Often their actions can lead to awkwardness or uncomfortable situations. Luckily the core team knows how to deal and shameful irreverence abounds (that, at least, is a good thing).
