private:startupinstitute https://www.indeed.com/cmp/startup-institute/reviews Oct 18th, 2018 12:00AM Open Open STARTUP INSTITUTE Marketing/Web Design/Web Dev/Sales Boston, MA USA Dangerous Group to Get Into SI is currently under investigation from multiple agencies (misleading investors, students, harassment, intimidation, etc), and it's gotten to the point that the C-levels are pretending not to be C-levels to avoid legal/civil technicalities. An example of misleading others would be by pumping up reviews as instructed by authoritative figures within the company to their underlings and students. In order to convince us to comply, they prevent us from receiving a refund until after the due date passes, and argue, "You're in the same boat as the rest of us, you mind as well keep it afloat". This method (along with paperwork pushed by a lawyer to stay silent) keeps us from speaking out and getting our money back. If we don't, then we can't get jobs, despite being instructed to announce that we are employees for SI (we pay to work for them). This brings an issue when it comes to the integrity of reviews (indeed, glassdoor, 3rd party review sites, yelp, etc), whenever Startup Institute comes up. If you notice, most reviews are a full 5/5, 100%, etc with oddly scripted praises. But let's take a look at the curriculum: There is none. Most instructors tend to be friends of the staff, who were asked at the bar the night before. How do we know this? Because one instructor admitted that he was only there because XXXX got him drunk and twisted his arm the night before. This led to an interesting Javascript lesson, involving the instructor not quite being all there. Other moments involved instructors mentioning that they're doing this only as a favour or quite literally stopping dead in their tracks mid-lesson, and thinking real hard about what else they can say to "inspire" or "teach" us. There were 2 instructors out of the many who did stand out as people who knew what they were doing, and I respect that, especially when it became apparent that they weren't even getting paid. As for the fraud and intimidation (amongst other unethical acts): They're still hammering that out via legal and civil cases/investigations. It was a long 8 weeks but you get close to everyone in the program and they are all there to help. You start everyday with stand up and then have fireside chats with CEOs and other interesting people. Later you break into in track sessions to learn the hard skills.
