Many of the people who work at the State Bar are wonderful. There are good benefits from the State, especially retirement. It's nice to have parking downtown but that's about it.

There are a lot. The largest one being the lack of diversity and cultural competency offered by this organization and its leaders. The culture of the State Bar is also extremely gossipy, and it's difficult to know if you're being told the truth and who exactly you can trust. In addition, many tasks are mundane and meaningless and not updated to be efficient. Many of the people and processes have not changed in years and it takes a long time to get things done. There is also not much flexibility while you work long days in an isolated cubicle that can be very depressing.

Start to change the culture by leading by example. Change things to be inclusive, efficient, innovative and kind to your employees. The State Bar has a long way to go and if it doesn't want to become completely obsolete and left behind in the modern world, a lot needs to change.

There was a lot of work and they were simple tasks. Nothing complicated and pretty stress free.

It was repetitive simple tasks with nothing complicated. Very boring. I would not recommend anyone who wants to make an impact or do work work to work here.

This place has some of the worst managers that have ever donned the title. 75% of all work is a complete waste of time. Processes are outdated as much as the managers are.

Not The Worst Job
|
|
There is certainly much to like about the place if you enjoy a routine that changes very little. There are decent health benefits and flexible schedules (depending on the department), and the staff are mostly enjoyable/easy to get along with. I've made a lot of lasting friendships here.
|
Executive leadership cannot be trusted. They will lie to your face with such ease that you will feel uncomfortable just suiting up for work every day. To much kowtowing to members out of fear of waking the bear. Not enough training/no one patient enough to teach you much should you land in the wrong department.

The next time merit increases are put on hold due to "playing it safe" or "the money just isn't there" or whatever poor reasoning is fed to your middle managers, maybe also let everyone in on the fact that the executive director was planning on asking for an increase in salary after less than a year on the job (and the board subsequently approved it). Shame on all of you. It's a stressful enough job without the lying and double talk. That you aren't even concerned about the optics of this is even more troubling.

I work in the Continuing Legal Education department of the State Bar. I have been there for almost fifteen years because my job is fun and my coworkers are the best.
|
As it is a state job, our pay isn't as high as it would be in the private sector.

I find job security to be the strongest asset to working here, and the rest depends if you feel strongly about the projects you are working on. People are in general agreeable to work with.
|
Public sector salaries are less and less viable for affordability to live in Austin, with no signs of improvement. Government agency culture definitely exists here, and can be frustrating in getting things done.

Seems like everyone sticks to the way it's been run for ages, when changes and styles of evaluating workers could adapt to newer models. My experience is management is too hands off to the point that you don't know what you're doing or where you stand for long periods of time.
