AT SCC at a time when IT was changing
|
I was at SCC whne there was a big turnover in the President and senior staff was changing. I was commuting 60 miles oneway for the job so it was not a good mix. Their IT standards and goals were pretty ancient and they were not taking steps to change them.

Do not work in the it department
|
If you are looking at an IT position at the college... Don't. Just don't. It's depressing, not worth the stress, and I came home frustrated almost every day.
It would take a multipage essay to fully describe my feeling about this place. The IT department is a complete mess and has very high turnover for obvious reasons that management can't seem to figure out and they are really the problem.
The main teams to avoid is Tech Support and Network Ops. The two directors are terrible and do not work together. Tier 2 has so little permissions they would be considered Tier 1/Help Desk in other organizations. In order to do anything, we had to get Netops involved which was managed by the biggest idiot I have ever met. Their director is completely clueless and has no management skills. The entire time I worked there, the netop team consisted of one person with multiple open positions. Instead of looking at the lower tiers and seeing the huge amount of talent and having them take some of the work to not burn out the single employee in the team, he did nothing but fight every time it was brought up.
Issues are prioritized by who will make the biggest fuss if not finished and projects often start and are never finished (especially in netops). The department does not follow any standard IT practices and honestly about 60% of my job was dealing with directors who wanted approval for everything.
There really are way too many issues with this place to list out here.
It wasn't all bad though. I had plenty of time to build some amazing relationships with my coworkers because we all hated the place equally. It used to be funny and we would make memes about the dumb things the directors would have us do and say but it just got old. I also built some wonderful relationships with some of the teachers that I will miss a lot. Benefits are also pretty good for full time but suck for anything less.
tldr: Avoid this dumpster fire like the plague. IT managers are terrible and don't know how to work together which is the cause of most of the issues.

The bad management built an amazingly unique camaraderie between coworkers, lots of time off, benefits are decent.
