I have weekly 1:1s with my manager and get the feedback/info I need to be successful. Managers (mostly made up of the leadership team since the company is small) have a lot of experience and knowledge and seem to be relatively low ego, which leads to good communication and an atmosphere of coaching (vs. heavy-handed management). I know people at other startups where the managers don’t have as much experience and those places sound really disorganized and often misguided (and crazy!). Stella is very goal-oriented, which makes it very clear whether you are successful in your role or not. With that, you are expected to be a high performer! :)The HR team is also amazing and regularly checks in (surveys and meetings) to make sure people are getting what they need. -The company strategy and performance are made abundantly clear. I’ve been at companies where this is not the case and you are left in the dark on where the company is headed and how you fit into the bigger picture. At Stella, I’ve found this to not be the case. The leadership team reports out every week about the performance of the business in a detailed Google Doc and the CEO Jordy also sends out his own weekly update and write up of what’s on his mind. On a monthly basis, there is a full update on how we are doing vs. our company goals. The KPIs and company performance are shared weekly with the company and available in real-time, so you can see not only how your own team is doing but also how all the others are doing, too. -People care and we have a lot of fun together. We celebrate individual success through Slack, our weekly all hands, and Star of the Month award. The co-founders lead by an example of transparency, positivity, and a growth mindset, which sets the tone for the rest of the organization. There is a strong team atmosphere, where other employees genuinely want to help and get to know one another. There are task forces (D&I, social, etc.) you can join, there’s a book club, and many social events. One of the company core values is One Team, One Mission, which is something that is real and not just talk. -My career path needs to be defined more. I feel like I have tons of room to grow at the company and have grown tremendously in the last few years, but it is not 100% clear to me what my career path is and how I get to where I want to go. We need a better program around that. -My onboarding was brief and I could have used more training about my role and learning about the industry. At the beginning, I struggled a bit to get all the relevant info that I needed. To be fair, this was a few years ago and I’ve heard there’s been a lot of work done on this front from other people on my team. There is also a company-wide effort to get everything into a knowledge sharing tool, so it seems like we are headed in the right direction. -I’d say work/life balance is good, but the pace can be grueling and wear you down at times. I first heard about Stella during a networking Saas event where I recall meeting a few of the their staff. After being super impressed by the combo of intelligence and friendliness, I learned they only had an entry level position available. Although I didn't have experience in the position or the industry I knew I wanted to be a part of this team. For the first year I sucked (bad) and wanted to quit everyday. However, leadership and my peers gave me a ton of support and patience - I recall often thinking it was weird how positive everyone was. The culture at Stella wasn't what I was used to working in, but it was exactly what I had hoped for. After 18 months I was promoted to Director, and now 8 months into this current role I'm knocking on the door of another promotion. If you bring effort, focus, and coachability - you'll excel here. On a side note, I've never worked at a company that places more emphasis on diversity and inclusion, as well as unconscious bias. They take these topics very seriously and I can honestly say that since working at Stella I've become a better human being. What started out as a SaaS point solution back in 2016 has now blossomed into a real platform with huge potential. The proof comes from hundreds of customers, from disruptive startups (e.g., Warby Parker & Lemonade) to big brands (e.g., Walmart & Quicken Loans), buying (and expanding) into it. Even more, our NPS scores are some of the highest I’ve ever seen. The culture at the company has also been awesome. Everyone is super supportive and willing to help one another. You get the sense that people really care about the company’s success, which pushes people to be at their best. The management team is highly engaged and is the most transparent I’ve seen at any company. If you have a startup mentality (i.e., you’re OK with change) and you’re willing to work hard, then you’ll have an opportunity to make a massive impact. Startups have a variety of twists and turns, and Stella is no exception. We’ve had to adapt to different themes and strategies as the business matures, which has not always been easy. During my time, I saw the business grow from 2 customers to the hundreds it has today. The things I appreciated the most about my time at Stella was my autonomy to share and explore new ideas, the incredible relationships I built with my colleagues and clients and the control I had in shaping my career. I wouldn't trade my experience there for anything and continue to root for their success even though I've moved on. Coming from a larger organization, I had to get used to tighter budgets and how the business allocated them. CEO is co-founder and has a solid sense of direction for the company. Manages investors and board very well. SVP of Client Services is co-founder and provides strong anchor to customer base. CFO is thoughtful and insightful and is a strong advocate for the business, a nice change! Recently added VP of People does a super job of pushing for diversity and inclusion in the work force. Very proactive at recruiting and valuing diverse, often under-represented backgrounds. Very fast growth and good customer retention put the company at the forefront of a rewarding market category. The work Stella does to "humanize" the contact center agent experience resonates strongly with our customers. Very rewarding to be part of this solid company. The company is young and growing very fast, exhibiting many of the stresses and strains of the fast growth. The management team works hard to manage this and pushes employees to be active in managing their work/life balance. Expectations are high for accelerated growth in the next year or two, so employees feel the urgency as part of the day to day experience. Many positions are staffed by people on only their first or second work experience, so much learning is done in every job. From the first week of working on the job until the last week, the work environment was toxic, and the senior leaders were always unaccountable. Many of them were instrumental to the sexism and racism happening in the workplace. Stella Connect puts on a big show in front of their clients to project their “support” for employees and how equitable the workplace is but this is all a lie. To put it lightly, don’t run, don’t walk, SPRINT and FLY away from this company. While interviewing, I was promised that I would be doing things that were never meant to come to fruition. Many of the individuals who were hired at the same time as I was were lied to about the teams they would be building, the ease of use of the product, and many of the responsibilities of their job. Essentially, I was catfished - the responsibilities, culture, product and leadership I was told of and that I would be a part of were all a lie. Career pathing is non-existent. Employees receiving titles without merit is rampant. The same people always receive recognition over and over again yet it took me almost a year and a lot of pleading to become recognized for the work I’d done.There is no career development, no formal onboarding that sets you up for success, no interest in what the employee would like to do outside of their job, nothing of the sorts of what you’ll be told during the interview. I had asked several times about what it took to get promoted, set up actions and goals around those objectives. I truly saw myself having a long career at Stella and wanted to work to be the best. What happened? Nothing really, just everyone on my team received a senior title except me and no one would tell me how I could go attain that as well. It is a well known fact that C-suite execs make racist and culturally ignorant comments, and there is a clear gender bias. Every woman on my team reported to a man after reorganization of the team. Additionally the only woman who holds a position of management is the HR/People Leader. From January 2020 until June 2020, 7 women and 2 men have left Stella Connect. This alone shows how differently women vs men feel towards the work environment and how they move from the company in masses. The co-founders of this company set a poor example for leadership and their actions, or lack thereof, will drive the business down. They go out of their way to hire white male individuals yet say they are “dedicated” to diversity. They co-founded a product around actionable feedback and helping frontline workers develop but do nothing to do the same for their own employees. Externally, the product is meant to make sure that employees can get feedback to their managers collaboratively. Internally, senior leaders would not listen to feedback nor apologize for shortcomings or mistakes. In the many occasions where feedback has been given about hiring, improving the workplace, more diversity and other issues, employees have been yelled at and/or told to stop complaining. Additionally, positive reviews left on 9/19/19, 9/24/19 and 6/26/2020 are fake and many of the 5 star reviews left at a earlier date are fake as well. I’m sure another 5 star one will mysteriously appear after this post as well. They are reviews from department heads who have either been asked to leave a positive review by the CEO or reviews from sales development reps who were asked to leave a review by their boss. Some individuals were even sat down in a conference room and told to write a positive review. They are trying to paint a very rosy picture of a pretty dark workplace. The goals you had for your career won’t happen. You will be promised things that don’t come true. If you are a woman or POC, you will work 3x harder than your male and white counterparts to barely be recognized. You’ll do more work and work long hours but you will not get a raise - as many have not received one within their 2-4 years of being at the company. You may complete all of your objectives, projects, quota and have the best performance on the team but I can guarantee you, someone who is friends with the co-founders will get promoted above you simply for the fact that they are friends with senior management. I definitely agree! - More transparency than I have seen in most other companies. The sales, client renewals and product updates are shared every week with everyone. - Clients really love the product, and the CS team maintains great relationships with big and small clients. - When joining Stella a lot people talk about the mission of improving the lives of customer service agents and there is genuine interest in doing that. - While not perfect, I think the leaders in the company are well-intentioned and doing their best. - Building great partnerships and a name in the industry. - Great momentum with new customers signing and clients renewing especially during COVID-19 / pandemic. I think the company has potential to be a big player in the industry. - Startups are hard and people work really hard. My time at Stella Connect was brief, but I knew almost instantly that I had made the wrong choice choosing this company. The leadership team sold me on a grand vision, which included the promise of building out my own team in a matter of months. Within weeks of joining, my boss left the company (which had been his plan well before I even began the interview process). I quickly realized that my peers and I would not be building out sub-teams, and all of the career growth we had been promised was non-existent. I met peers and colleagues who had been there for years without any form of promotion. Once my boss left, my team became directly exposed to the leadership team. The founders of this company had virtually no work experience and seemed to have stumbled into a market that just happened to need their product. However, their lack of leadership and business experience led to countless bad decisions around hiring, product road mapping, and people management. The irony is that Stella Connect is a FEEDBACK company. However, when we provided feedback, we were not only ignored but reprimanded for having opposing views to the leadership team. I will never forget being scolded by the CEO for requesting that we prioritize D&I in hiring. He lectured our entire team for pushing back, informed us that there were no diverse candidates available, and asked us to stop complaining. To be clear, I put everything in this review in our employee engagement survey - which was promptly ignored and I was called out for being too critical. Further, sexism ran rampant at Stella Connect. My ideas and work were constantly attributed to my male colleague. Even after I led an entire quarterly planning meeting, the CEO complimented my male colleague on a job well done. By the end of my time there, I had to look at these things and laugh. The irony was so absurd, but unfortunately, most employees can't let these injustices roll off them so easily. I count myself lucky that I was able to get out quickly.
