I’ve worked here for more than 10 years, and there was a dramatic decline when a change in management was made 4 years ago. The environment is very toxic and negative, which is why I decided to leave. It’s sad it use to be a good company, but employees are no longer valued nor given raises. Pay is terrible. Legal Assistants, or rather Claim Analysts are expected to manage case loads anywhere from 600-1,100 at one time with few resources due to lack of documents/information retrieved by Client Services and submitted by the actual clients; this stems from the lack of communication between departments and management not being aware as to what each analyst requires in order to effectively work each claim/case in a timely manner. Policies often changed, whether it be firm-wide or specific departments. This created a lot of confusion as managerial staff often contradicted one another and/or did not properly communicate (written/verbal) between departments or ranks of managerial staff concrete changes. There were several instances where the staff was told to change a way of doing a certain task, the staff complied and would later be questioned for what they were doing. I personally saved such emails to physically show whatever superior would ask to prove I was doing as I was told. The managing partner is hardly involved with this company due to other ventures she has sought out. This caused major conflicts and misleading information from departmental heads and general staff up to what she felt was happening at the firm. There was little room for error and hardly any room for an explanation if she assumed something and was mistaken. At one point I believe the phrase to our pre-lit department was, "...monkeys can do your job..."; this was in reference to how easy she thought our job was to handle. Yet, she was unaware of the process within our department despite our previous supervisors attempts to explain or provide diagrams and written guidelines. It was shocking to know that this "law firm" had been operating for so many years, yet so many partners and attorneys were unaware of certain laws and regulations that had to be followed for certain types of claims. When the pre-lit department was made aware of Government Claims that needed to be filed for Medi-Cal/Medicare and other government type cases, it took a staff member (legal assistant/claim analyst) to do all of the research and come up with guidelines as to how our legal assistants and attorneys should be working each claim, writing proper appeals and the how-to on filing the actual government claims; this included strict timelines for specific types of claims. Little regard was given to any employee who went above and beyond their call of duty; however, there were a few attorneys who would regularly comment on the achievements of the support staff (claim analysts) and wondered why we weren't being used for more important tasks. Favoritism was a humongous downfall in this company. There were a few members of the support staff that, if at any other company, would have been fired for actions they took or things that were said in the workplace. However, due to ties with other managerial staff, such employees were simply moved (not physically) to another department or given an easier job/task to do since they were not competent with their current position; several mistakes were made by such individuals that could jeopardize the integrity of the firm including violating HIPAA on several occasions. Written and verbal complaints were made by several staff members and knowingly two managerial staff members; rather than dealing with the individuals themselves, department meetings were held in which the department was scolded as a whole, leaving the disruptive incompliant individuals free of any disciplinary action, which caused a lot of tension between departments and individuals. There were several employees that had great ideas as to how our department could flow better, feedback on processes that were currently put in place by other members of the firm that weren't really aware as to how we (pre-lit) did things or what it took for us to properly and effectively do our jobs. The firm needs to hire enough staff to properly manage the case loads and work that goes along with each client's' files. Employees were considerably overworked and very unhappy with how the firm treated individuals and lack of appreciation toward their staff. After three years and no raise and/or bonus, one feels underappreciated, especially when the work and specific duties are increasing on a regular basis. Management needs to be more involved with their employees, and before making judgement on how "monkeys can do your job", maybe take a day or two to sit down and actually try to do our job from beginning to end (opening a brand new case file, filling out all required fields in the JYS system, calculating the proper reimbursement due by insurance without any mistakes, writing appeals, gathering supporting documentation, negotiating when possible, writing additional appeals and/or meet & confers and/or government claims, then moving the files forward within a timely manner to pre-lit attorneys). I feel that shame and extreme pressure should not be applied to employees, if the managerial staff doesn't even know how to do what we do. Learn to appreciate your employees and keep lines of communication open or else attorneys and support staff will continue to leave your firm in large numbers; other members of your staff will fall short because of their lack of interest for your company due to the way people are treated. Unfortunately there is a high employee turn over. There is not a lot of growth within the company. You will be in your same position for the duration of your employment.
