Meeting professionals in corporate partner companies The leadership is clueless here. They have no real strategies on how to grow or maintain the organization. Their focus is on themselves and their titles. This organization does not stand on its mission which is suppose to be about the girls. The mission is to build a top heavy leadership and cut those who work with the teens. There is no support from your direct supervisor. Lots of talking sessions but no action plans. Poor poor management this organization is not what they appear to be. There is no setting staff up for success instead you will have to figure things out for yourself while they watch you fail. As a womens organization that is about empowerment and helping women find their voice employees are not allowed to speak truth to upper management or give feedback on their poor leadership. The organization has potential but the leadership doesn’t. This org is going to crumble and fall if they continue with the leadership team they have. They have lost money, mentors, board members, teens, a chapter, partnerships and lots of staff. This is a credit to themselves and their families and nothing to do with Step Up’s involvement. If anything, youth find solace with the women of color on the ground doing the work — or even mid-level management women of color doing actual work — and see them as a personal resource. Once you work there, you see that youth are coached to say Step Up is what has helped them — instead of naming individuals who the organization rarely acknowledges or recognizes. When youth privately talk about how racist and transphobic Step Up feels. From the COO to local directors — these women like to talk a lot but don’t do a lot. One has been in LA for over a decade and is essentially collecting checks but everyone secretly discusses how she doesn’t do her job or lead her team at all. They got $3 million in funding from a corporate sponsor who took it right back — due to terrible executive leadership. Universally, it is a Mean Girls Club. And they use women of color to do their dirty work. You either have to fall in line or they will find a way to give you an NDA and dismiss you. private:stepupwomensnetwork https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=334585 Oct 2nd, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Step Up Women's Network The management and leadership of this organization are issues - The mission at one point was the focus of the organization. - The students actually used to matter. - Building a positive culture to work in used to be an important thing to the staff. - The middle and lower level employees are amazing to work with but unfortunately doesn't make up for the management of this organization. - Would be surprised if this organization is still around a year from now. The management team is full of the same type of person, all yes people and if you aren't one of them you won't be with the organization very long. - The management has lead the organization into a free fall. They have cut programs, jobs due to their lack of managerial ability. - Working at the organization is like working in the Trump White House. The least qualified individuals serve in the leadership positions while most of the hard work is being done at the mid and lower levels. They have formed an "old boys network" but of unqualified leaders. If you actually want to learn leadership skills this is definitely not the right place to work. - The fundraising department is poorly staffed and lead by individuals with zero personal skills and ability to raise money. It seems like the least happy group of individuals working at the company. - Consistent lies by the management staff. private:stepupwomensnetwork https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=334585 Sep 13th, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Step Up Women's Network JV org trying to play at Varsity level -empowering women to empower girls is a great message and cause -Step Up alums have a lot of positive feedback about their experience -you get the week between Christmas and New Years off but not sure how long that will last if budget is an issue -everyone I have worked with is dedicated to the mission -leadership has an "open door" policy -little to no opportunities for growth -leadership gets to participate in career development events, training, etc. but middle management is forgotten -staff is underpaid and overworked -leadership and board expects Step Up to operate like a large organization and it causes burn-out because there are limited resources, time and funds -no HR department -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 5.0 2.0 3.0 4.0 2.0 2.0 3.0 334585 Open Please stop trying to operate like a big organization. The organization is very top down, and most of the decision makers are white women who don't understand the experience of women of color. Although the executive team says that feedback is important to them, there is no follow-through on change. Additionally, when a mistake is made by leaders on top, they don't keep themselves accountable, and instead, punish workers who are working more directly with the teens. This organization is suppose to be a women empowerment organization, but instead, you feel disempowered as a worker because leadership is not very transparent with decisions. Facilitators utilize their personal experiences as women of color and marginalized individuals to create safe and brave spaces for young people. This is the secret sauce of the organization (that is not valued or understood by non poc leadership). The young people that you get to work with are brilliant and brave. You have opportunities to build community and connections with colleagues that you work alongside each day (usually out of solidarity and survival because the organization can be very toxic). Absolutely no accountability for non poc staff and c-suite leadership. Emails about human resource related concerns go unanswered for weeks or months or all together. Women of color are viewed as hostile and are tone policed when trying to bring forth serious issues around racism, classism, inefficiencies, inconsistencies in work expectations or any inequity in the workplace. Decisions about work load, responsibilities and performance goals are inconsistent across regions. Staff is expected to do the same work despite not having the staff or capacity. There is no room for growth largely due to mismanagement and poor strategic planning. There is very little transparency, so staff are left trying to figure out why issues are occurring for themselves. When an issue is finally addressed by the c-suite leadership, there is only talk but no clear action steps. If there are action steps, it's usually "open communication" with the leadership. This doesn't work because staff don't feel safe coming forward with issues for fear of retaliation or termination. Leadership has no idea the amount of work put in or the amount of mental and emotional labor that teen programs staff put in, especially when it comes to supporting teens in the program. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 10.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 334585 Open Gain a deeper appreciation for the work that teen programs staff does, the communities that the teens come from including the values and traditions of those communities. Understand that the majority of teen programs staff who are doing the work also come from those communities, have similar experiences, values and traditions. Work to make Step Up a place that reflects the communities that we work in. Advocate for staff and teens instead of asking them to be super humans for the same pay and titles. Bring on a talented executive leader who is solely responsible for human resources and culture and can be unbiased because they aren't under the pressure of having to also handle development or operations. Terrible organization to be responsible for teen girls of color and underresourced girls. White women harm women of color who work there constantly and gain tenure. Teen programs team treated like labor dogs with little pay. They pretend to take feedback. Managers saying racist things. Belittling others.
