I worked at SLP quite a while ago so this may all be stale information. SLP feels mismanaged in a way that decisions are made on emotions instead of data. Also that many people want to make changes and make the operations better but they aren't working together or being effectively managed. I feel like change could be managed better in a drive for increased productivity, cost savings and profitability. Dirty, low quality office space lacks ventilation or air filtration with bad indoor air quality. People don't want to use their vacation days when they are sick so they come to work. Must use vacation time for sick time. Only 12 days per year vacation/sick time total. Lack of training and mentoring. I came to this company with 6 years of solar experience and I was looking to work with people with more than me so I could keep growing and learning. When I arrived, I found a lack of interest in sharing knowledge and coworkers that were defensive about their ways of solving problems and a lack of openness to learning from my experience. I think some of my coworkers and immediate supervisor felt threatened by me, the new person, having a solid technical understanding of what I was doing and that I wanted to learn and progress. I got the feeling that many people at SLP want everything to just stay as is and I'm a nuisance for that. The company is low tech with software and data collection and analysis. I think they could get better business insights if they collected and analyzed data. I found many people were very resistant to change but the company wasn't profitable. I wanted to see the company do better and I wanted to make more money and have a better benefits package. I was there for 2 years and never got a raise. I don't think it was just me that didn't get a raise. I felt like there was not room for growth for me by title or salary. The company's future didn't feel promising to me.

There are some incredibly smart and dedicated people who work at SLP. I am often inspired to give and do more to make the company better for all. There are a lot of long term die-hards both in the field and the office. If you want to work in solar in the Bay area in a non-corporate environment, this is the place to be!
|
There is a work culture set up that expects self-accountability which is great because many people are self driving and care a tremendous amount about the overall good of their coworkers. However, for people who do not self-motivate, there are not significant consequences. The owner of the company is unfortunately moved more by emotion and less by financial knowledge and how to run a company.

More than just a place to work

Pretty much everyone at SLP has a positive attitude, listens well to their peers, and takes their job seriously. The company is very transparent with finances, goals, and status, and as a result there is a lot of buy-in to companywide success. There are no jobs that don't have an impact on the company as a whole, and everyone is valued.
There are a fair number of events to bring employees from different departments together so that there is better understanding of both personalities and roles.
In my department, we feel like a family more than just a team. There is a lot of love and caring to be had if you're up for it.
Casual dress is the norm, flexible hours are the norm. Emphasis is on getting your work done, not looking snappy and punching a clock.
The company as a whole is serious about the "triple bottom line" of People, Planet, Profit. The employees and customers are taken care of, without doing harm to the environment, while earning money to sustain the business and the mission.

Sometimes change can be slow, but that's not always bad. More processes could be put in place to help prevent errors, and that is being worked on.

A couple of the Directors are a little too sold on their own out-dated expertise and have stopped supporting their staff's ingenuity. Middle manager's have SLP experience but lack true leadership abilities causing a deep drop in morale.

With more then 35 years experience in Solar Power everybody takes their job serious without taking themselves to serious. Always with the interest to provide best to the customer they are more diligent then bigger competitors. Great engineering department, excellent planning and good management. Good communication and openness for suggestions. Overall - as an employee you could not ask for a better environment. If work satisfaction is primer job objective - this is a great place to work and a great place to get solar installations.
