private:sweetbriarcollege https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=128413 Aug 11th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Sweet Briar College Sweet Briar, VA Run far, far away It is an extremely beautiful campus, but that is about it in terms of pros. -This was the most toxic culture I've ever experienced in a workplace. Everything is treated as a crisis, so when there is a real crisis (such as COVID), things just fall apart. I also discovered what toxic positivity is. I don't know how many times I was told to just be happy when myself, my position and my coworkers were being treated so poorly, micromanaged by upper administration, and our "expert opinions" were not being listened to. We're essentially not allowed to do our jobs. -Employee retention is terrible. In the two years that I worked there, at least 25 employees that I am aware of left Sweet Briar, including faculty, directors, and vice presidents (but there were probably more). I feel that type of turnover is unsustainable and makes for an unstable work environment. -Myself and my team have been told to do things by upper administration that were morally and ethically wrong in my opinion. -The president has made several inappropriate and insulting comments to myself and others, as well as has said negative things about coworkers and former employees in front of groups of people. -HR is basically ineffective when it comes to dealing with the toxic workplace. They are nice people, but are not helpful when it comes to actually handling any of the above issues I mentioned. The HR office itself is understaffed and has had a complete turnover of staff within the two years I was there. -When the school shut down and sent students home for COVID in March of 2020, there were some departments that did not allow employees to work from home, or at least were very reluctant to do so. But overall there was a very negative attitude about working from home coming from the upper administration. I know this is just another review from a disgruntled former employee, and it does depend on what your role is and what department you work for. But it is a very difficult place to work at overall and I wish I had been warned before I started working there. My mental health was impacted negatively from my experience at Sweet Briar and I don't want that to happen to others. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 3.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 128413 Open -Don't micromanage your employees. -Let your employees do their jobs. -Replace the president with someone who will not create a culture of crisis, negativity, impulsive decision making and toxicity. -Let HR have more authority in making positive changes in the workplace. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Apr 26th, 2021 07:12PM Apr 26th, 2021 07:12PM Sweet Briar College

private:sweetbriarcollege https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=128413 Jul 24th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Sweet Briar College Admissions Counselor You can't be successful if you don't give people a reason to stay I was a student here as well and I loved the sense of community and family that SBC offered. Being able to live on campus was a big bonus as well for many. I loved that I was able to stay close to my students even after they enrolled. I loved being able to watch them grow. The director of admissions during my tenure was an amazing manager and boss. He had an active interest in developing his employees and creating a cooperative atmosphere within the office. He made our office want to try and perform well. He set realistic goals and provided his reasoning for them. He didn't just leave his staff wondering what we were supposed to do unlike previous management. He actually had managerial ability and it showed. Where to begin! I worked here for three years and was never told of any career development opportunities or offered a raise! There was no career track set up within the office to help new counselors learn of a potential career track or want to stick around. This lead to an insanely high turnover rate, not only within admissions but in other campus departments, an unfortunate trend that has continued according to people I know who still work there. People who were actually making the changes that admissions and the College needed either left or were fired and it's brought things back to the way they were before 2015. Management doesn't really exist because no one there knows how to manage, they just know how to horde power or dictate changes! There's no real managerial knowledge or ability in the leadership. The administration would also make dramatic changes to programs without informing admissions staff on the road. Imagine telling a prospective student about an awesome program one day, getting back to the office two days later and finding out that the program has been cut! I don't have to imagine because it happened to me more than once! The administration also talked about how important admissions was while simultaneously cutting our budget and relegating us to the back burner of issues. If you want a college to be successful you can't chain your recruiting staff to a wall and expect that they'll be able to perform! Stop treating admissions as a scapegoat and get faculty to understand that they play a role in recruitment. It's not just the counselors' responsibility. Higher-ups never listen to what those in the field are trying to tell them and instead force things that people don't want and have no benefit to the College. Parts of what made SBC so special are also quickly disappearing. Professors who made the College so special have been fired for no reason, programs have been cut, and the administration is back to pretending that they don't have to tell anyone anything. Transparency is no longer existent and it's at a detriment to everyone on campus. The Alums are both crucially beneficial and a hindrance at times. They are one of our biggest strengths and rallying points but they've been lulled into a false sense of security because the administration is presenting the situation through rose colored glasses. As a student I adored SBC and my professors and community, after working here I've seen how bad things are. I'm angry because I want it to be successful but I don't see how that will happen given the current circumstances. -1.0 DISAPPROVE 2.0 3.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 128413 Open Be honest with employees, faculty, staff, and alums about the Colleges issues. Actually listen to what your people on the front lines are saying, they know what they're talking about! Pay people decently, set up well defined career tracks, and offer professional development opportunities! Set up a system where they know what the steps are to get a raise or promotion! Also, just an idea- if they live on campus only charge utilities. Most of those apartments are sitting empty and falling into disrepair. Having people actually living in them and paying at least for utilities would bring in some money and mean less upkeep. Also it would mean that you end up paying people a little more without actually having to pay them more, which would have made a huge difference for me. Be open and honest with your stakeholders. Being sneaky and underhanded didn't work well for the administration in 2015 and it won't work well for you. There are so many out there who want to help SBC but can't because they're only working with partial information. TRANSPARENCY IS KEY! Bring on people who have managerial abilities to run offices. It's great if someone has a PhD but it doesn't mean anything in a lot of instances if they don't have a clue how to manage. You have to give people a reason to want to stay and a love for a place and students will only go so far. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 4.0 Apr 26th, 2021 07:12PM Apr 26th, 2021 07:12PM Sweet Briar College
