private:synthego https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1048007 Feb 11th, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Synthego Software Engineer Redwood City, CA Promising direction despite growing pains I work in the development organization as a software engineer and personally have had a very positive early career experience in the company. Synthego's transition from being an R&D startup to a biotech manufacturing company with well-managed operations has been difficult. In the past two years we've had a lot of turnover and a lot of changes in upper management (the upper management changes have been in the right direction, in my view). The people who thrive here are those willing to carve new paths within the company and also tolerate a constant pace of change. I've seen real initiative-takers propel from the staff level to the director level in under a year. I've also seen plenty of people get overwhelmed or frustrated because they get stuck on something they don't like and quit. The company has a strong vision and I think we have the technology to reach it in the coming years. I like our R&D org, the people are brilliant and generous. There's a sense of a unified struggle, not a divided one, and we all believe in the direction the company is headed. I'm grateful for the benefits: good insurance, (unmatched) 401k, generous vacation PTO and sick pay (they recently split PTO into those two categories, they were previously one), free unlimited restaurant-quality food, free shuttles from San Francisco, a decent educational reimbursement program, and other smaller things too. Management has gotten better at listening to feedback in the past year - we have regular town halls and other events where people can pose questions and concerns directly to senior management. I can't speak well to parts of the company outside R&D. If you're an engineer or research scientist, want to be part of something big, and aren't afraid to take initiative on intimidating projects, I think it's an exciting place to work. Synthego still has a startup mentality about projects it takes on which some people don't like. Sometimes we'll scrap projects people had been working on and that can be frustrating. Historically there haven't been many career advancement options, but that's improving. The HR group recently announced clear internal promotion and cross-departmental move programs that I think are promising. We have high turnover which can be challenging. About 1.5 years is average tenure. You might need to take on something that was started by another person. In my experience, many people who quit still believe in the company and want to see it succeed (the former employees I've talked with exercised their stock options before they left, which says something). 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 1.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 1048007 Open Listen to employees about their ideas for career advancement as well as equity and inclusion. private:synthego https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1048007 Feb 10th, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Synthego Walk away and don’t look back Free food. Good people and a bit flexible schedule Lots of harassment. Predators within! I feel bad for all the women who have been harassed and HR turning a blind eye on them just to keep a scandal away. HR is the worst and should be replaced for letting all the cases slip. Management setting impossible goals with no concrete plans because they do not even know what they are doing and rely on their people to decide for them and reap the benefits. -1.0 NEGATIVE 1.0 POSITIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 4.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1048007 Open Wake up and replace all of them. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 1.0 Apr 26th, 2021 08:29PM Apr 26th, 2021 08:29PM Synthego Health Care Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
private:synthego https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1048007 Feb 1st, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Synthego Laboratory Assistant Menlo Park, CA Happy to be gone The facilities are nice and very pretty. The access to the gym and snacks available in the break room are a pleasant distraction from the glaring issues with the company's morals. There are plenty of lovely, intelligent, and hardworking people who work at Synthego and I loved working with all of them. The office manger is super sweet and loves to spoil employees with treats! I only recommend people apply as a first job since its an easy job that is good to gain experience, however unless you truly want to conform lack luster company culture or choose to see through rose colored glasses for the rest of your life I wouldn't think of it as permanent career choice. There is a reason for the huge turn over rates that occur within the company, despite the rhyme and reason some of the people attempt to give when questioned about it. It is NOT a consequence of COVID or people not being motivated to work. There is an issue with the management in charge; ranging from the lack of professionalism, ignorance to any of the process' that occurring within the lab, disrespectful attitudes, etc. Another issue is the treatment of women within the company. It's almost comedic how sexist the company culture is. There are lots of bells and whistles they attempt to do to pretend they actual care about their female staff. There are numerous accounts of professional disrespect or straight sexual harassment towards the women in the laboratory I can list, however I will not. This isn't an issue of the staff not being proactive in reporting it when seeing it or experiencing it, but rather the company choosing to turning a blind eye or being swiftly swept under the rug. There was some professional sabotage that occurred while working there, attempting to get other shifts "in trouble". The various teams within the lab are experience a lot of pressure from the management to up hold unrealistic goals which affects that work culture, so again this is an issue from the lack of good leadership rather than the lab associates working in the lab. Management likes to dangle opportunities over your head in order with no intention to actually follow through. Bizarre sense of grandeur towards the company. They really make you feel like it doesn't get better than Synthego. There are no attempts to actually fix these issues. Seriously, look through the reviews, there is a reason there is a surge pattern of chunks of bad reviews and then good reviews and then bad reviews. They hire people, they quit from all these issues, and then hire a new group of people. The cycle repeats. As I said previously, it's not an issue of the coronavirus. 1.0 POSITIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 12.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 2.0 2.0 1048007 Open None of what I said previously will make it a change.
