Great start up culture in a small office
|
|
Given the company situation it has a very cool vibe between the new US culture brought by one side of the company and the French tradition on the other side. The company is committed to team building with events and communication while working DT Paris and embracing long discussions and team work. Very flexible work policy, even before the pandemic, but they're making sure that they follow official recommendations while respecting individual preferences regarding WFH.
|
Coming from a very big company, it's a big change to work for such a small company (regarding amount of people working).

People-Centric Culture & Great Vision
|
|
- Team restructured recently, including sharp people
- Partnership & benevolence are part of the core values of the company
- Very interesting, high-level projects mixing human science & technology together
|
Processes can be somewhat heavy sometimes (lack of agility), but nothing that is not recoverable.

Great team and professional development!
|
|
- Welcoming team and everyone seems to genuinely enjoy each other's company inside and outside of the office
- Even though it's a small team, one person's success is everyone's success, so there's never a lack of people willing to help you learn or be more successful in your role.
- A lot of positive change happening. The team is expanding to include new roles to support product development and recently acquired by a company in the US, so there's a lot of external support from the top down.

I guess you wouldn't believe it.
|
|
There was once a small, somewhat united team that grew from the beginning, which I joined a bit later. It wasn't a dream place everyday in that small office, but we did our best, made mistakes, made progress, had a product with a reasonable amount of customers and users. But this era is no more.
|
Offices are four or five times larger, but almost everyone from the original team left (or should I say fired because of risks of bankrupcy, or pushed to leave), environment is so toxic you can feel it, and there's a good chance you'll be ripped off by someone trying to justify his overpriced role by shadowing your work as your "manager". There's still a few good, human and competent people there though, and you might negotiate a good salary considering how desperate they're to fill empty job positions. If you don't fear wondering if you'll get paid at the end of the month, that is.

I've seen such an incredible amount of stupidity and inhumane stuff through those four years I could write a book, so I figure it'd be better to do a list of things to avoid in your own company rather than advices to follow:
- Don't trust remote CEOs.
- Avoid CEOs that are willing to push interns out in the middle of nowhere to "cut expenses", but are willing to continue to pay people like a damn NASDAQ-listed company to work on a public website.
- Don't trust newcomers, especially for finance roles.
- Do background checks, especially for finance roles, for christ's sake.
- If you identify a drop in work activity, ask yourself if that's due to the context (no vision, no sales, people leaving, no guarantee of having an income at the end of the month), don't blame LEAVING INTERNS for "demotivating" the rest of your team.
- Leverage your existing talents and speak with them. Don't expect them to impress you if you don't even understand their job and haven't set clear objectives for them...
- ... and if they don't fit for a promotion, find a good leader and introduce him/her properly instead of trusting him/her and forcing him/her on them.
- Have a bit of humanity, and don't announce people's departure in team meetings even though they just told you that they wished to discuss about it. Being a CEO doesn't mean you have to necesarily be a cruel, sad human being.
- Have a bit of intelligence and don't let your key people leave, or worse, pressure them to leave by themselves.
- Focus on what matters, your PRODUCT, think long-term but act fact, stop dropping features like online payment, only to reimplement them a few years later.
- Don't consider yourself a great entrepeneur because you raised some cash from one company and wasted 3 millions in one year (on a team that never exceeded 15 members or so).
- Stop the arrogant french bashing: you're french and that doesn't make you more american than you are.
