I have a hard time knowing where to start. Is Tanner perfect? Absolutely not. Is it a great place to work? You bet! One of the things that I am most impressed about with Tanner is the willingness to change and improve. The partners and management team are always open to suggestions and making changes. There have been several times in my 5 years at Tanner where there were concerns or issues brought up with management about a policy or something that was outdated and then after a few months of discussion and weighing in by many many parties, change was made. Some of those were things that some of the partners were very very passionate about and ultimately they were persuaded and agreed with the change. Basically in my experience management is open to feedback and willing to make changes to improve, with the expectation that both parties listen to the other side's perspective, and ultimately reach a good decision for change. Other procedural type changes are being tweaked and modified all the time as well, and the Firm is always willing to try new things and approaches. I always feel like my voice is heard if I'm willing to share it.
Coming from a Big 4 firm it is night and day difference, the people and culture at Tanner are top notch from my experience, and even though the hours are long when times are busy, my worst weeks at Tanner are better than my average weeks at my prior firm. I also spent time in industry and when comparing to Tanner's public accounting, there are pros and cons to both, but I obviously came back to public accounting (Tanner) and have turned down several job offers since coming. Tanner has probably the broadest client base and you get the best experience in my mind. If you want to be a self-starter and jump in and own things and improve you will absolutely thrive here. I've worked with some of the brightest people since coming here to Tanner (not only above me, but peers and teams as well!) It truly is a great place to work. Also, lots of flexibility. I have the ability to control my schedule and people are always willing to help cover for you if emergencies come up...but that flexibility requires a little bit of proactivity on your part. If you are proactive and hard working you can create lots of flexibility to work around various things.

Hours. It is public accounting, so this isn't unexpected, but you will work overtime. The thing that was a surprise initially is how it seems to drag on into the summer oftentimes (not every year, but sometimes). The flip side of the flexibility can also be a con, if you want flexibility you have to put in the hours/effort at other times to make sure jobs progress, it's a two-sided coin.
The second thing I would suggest is pay. It is no secret that you will be paid less in public accounting starting out than you would in industry, but the growth is faster and you'll end up better off (in general). It would be nice if the pay gap wasn't as wide though.

(1) Continue to be open to feedback as you have in the past, and keep trying to improve.
(2) Another thing would be to try and narrow that pay gap with industry. Public accounting has high turnover, and Tanner's is lower than industry...but if there wasn't such a pay gap at the lower levels there wouldn't be as much of a draw. I understand the reasons, etc. but I also know that as a staff you are struggling to get by, often with a family, and it would alleviate a lot of life stress that compounds the work stress if the lower levels were paid more. Even if it wasn't a base increase, but was some incentive pay at the staff and senior levels I think it would be a good idea.
(3) Try to even out the hours across people, and make sure hour expectations on a week by week basis are realistic
