The opportunity to meet incredible speakers and watch their talks live There’s a lot of free food around the office for different events It’s exciting to see TED content in the news and changing the world If you’re lucky enough to become a favorite of management, you’ll get numerous career growth opportunities The NYC office has great furniture, working spaces, views, and plants There’s a white liberal culture. While some departments are great to work for due to their leadership, other departments have systemic race issues. Many teams are white with the most junior-level employee a person of color. Due to lack of advancement opportunities or mentorship for people of color, many often get tired and quit. Though leadership goes through the motions of talking about diversity, white fragility often prevails, and TED fails to make management and structural changes to make the workplace more equitable. The path to promotion is often unclear. Without clear expectations and regular feedback, many feel their hard work goes unnoticed and they feel exploited, especially since the pay is low. Over time, the lack of incentive to perform contributes to staff burnout. People come in idealistic and excited to work for TED but get frustrated with the lack of structure. Paired with the lack of structure is the problem of projects concocted on a whim by leadership with little thought into execution. With people stretched thin and thrown into projects at random times, team collaboration can become contentious. Throwing treats and a few lunches at the problem doesn’t solve the underlying issues. TED is glorious for those at the top making six figures and hobnobbing with celebrities. Many joined TED in the early days, and they are untouchable, regardless of how much of a bully they are, and how high their team’s turnover is. This, unfortunately, holds the organization back and might cause the company to stagnate. With 30+ having left the company in just the past six months, with the majority on the tech team, the company is in dire need of listening to its employees and rethinking its leadership team. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 4.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 680044 Open Don’t be afraid to fire people who have been at TED for a long time if they exhibit toxic workplace behavior. Consider power dynamics in the company when asking the company to have open dialogues. Hire managers with management experience. Compensate those who do diversity work for the company in addition to their full-time job. If you listen to those leaving the company or pay attention to the questions asked in the anonymous Q/A during All Hands meetings, you will gain insight into what needs to be changed. Create clear promotion plans for all staff, especially people of color. Make sure that it’s not just white people who coach and pick the TED Talk speakers. Create more uniform policies on who can work from home. Stop launching so many initiatives and try to focus on relevance and quality. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 4.0 Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM TED Conferences

private:tedconferences https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=680044 Apr 10th, 2021 12:00AM Open Open TED Conferences Manager Ability to make an impact on a truly mission-driven organization Working at TED, you're able to have a direct impact on a globally renown and admired organization. TED is a household name in spreading ideas that matter, and it's pretty cool to be a part of that. If anything, there's a huge opportunity to spread that impact and expand its relevancy even more as TED defines its new chapter. Because experimentation and creative thinking are at the heart of TED, it sometimes can come at the expense of cross-team coordination/alignment and lack of formalized structures and processes, similar to what you would expect at an early stage startup (which some people will love, but it's not for all). Also, this last year was tough for everyone, and what's next for TED is still being ironed out. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 1.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 680044 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 0.0 Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM TED Conferences

Good work-life balance 3. Nice individuals - The company is experiencing high turnover due to poor leadership and a lack of clear direction. The CEO, Chris Anderson, is completely out of touch. As a small organization, senior leaders are treated with immunity for poor management and poor behavior. Diversity among upper management is also non-existent. - Bullying from people managers towards junior staffers goes unresolved and underreported due the small size of the organization, which does not truly allow for reporting to be anonymous without consequence. 2. Understaffing and Growth: Rather than add resources, individuals are expected to excitedly take on more responsibilities without any promotion or salary increases. There is a lack of upward mobility for employees, which has resulted in high turnover. Working here is good for the name, but not for long term growth or morale. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 2.0 1.0 4.0 2.0 1.0 4.0 1.0 680044 Open Find a way to improve people managers. private:tedconferences https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=680044 Mar 21st, 2021 12:00AM Open Open TED Conferences Software Engineer Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain The team is made up of very smart and very thoughtful people who does what it takes to support each other while building amazing products. People are there because they truly care about the mission and the impact they are making on the world. It's everything you'd hope it would be, until you pull back the curtain and see what's there. The mission that the company projects seems to only be a ruse that leads to elite events for wealthy people. Senior Leadership has either lost its way, or never had it and no longer has the buffers that once covered that up. Decisions on direction seem to come from gut feel and emotion, and ignores data and customer feedback. Large and complex projects have been imposed with publicly announced deadlines, allowing for no wiggle room and no input on whether it is possible. Then when the impossible is met, there is no appreciation, only criticism. There is a lot to say about "who you know" when it comes to this org. You may not need to have the qualifications or experience for a top leadership role, as long as you know the right people, This could get you the position of your dreams without even going through an interview process. Diversity and Inclusion be damned. This ends with someone leading a department who has good intentions, but no skills to actually do the job. This is seen by the high amount of turnover that has occurred in the past 6 months, when previously attrition rarely occurred. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 7.0 2.0 3.0 2.0 3.0 2.0 1.0 680044 Open Remember why TED exists. It is not only to pad your ego, but to benefit the world. Listen to objective advice, and not only to the people who will agree with you, or are too afraid to push back. As we move through some turbulence, don't pull the rug out from under the people who have been doing the detail work for ages. Listen to them, and hear their questions and concerns about any major shifts in direction. But mostly, I'd advise watching some TED talks. There are some great ones on leadership. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 6.0 Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM Apr 27th, 2021 05:33PM TED Conferences
