Local staff are friendly, but there is a large culture gap between the Reporters and the staff. The Bureau Chief is friendly at times, but comes across as arrogant/ misogynistic other times. The company does not really care about the local staff as there is no room for advancement. The company cares about how they are perceived by the public, and only that.

The job pays well for what you do, and there are extensive travel opportunities. Offices are in good locations due to Japanese culture of elitism.

- Toxic work culture. No matter where you work you are expected to work to Japanese "standards". This does not mean work hard, it just means work long hours. Nothing else is valued but putting in maximum hours and quality or volume of work actually done is completely disregarded.
- Zero oversite for bureau chiefs. BCs are able to do whatever they want and treat local staff however they want
- Zero contact with head office if you work for a foreign bureau.
- BCs have no training in the culture of the country they are working in. Overt racism, sexism, homophobia is all common, BCs are extremely rude both to their local staff and local people in general.
