Worked for free, so I am unsure of benefits and employer salary. Learned a lot about reporting and writing, and learned how to properly edit and fact check.

Productive and highly collaborative workplace.
|
I loved my time at The Daily Californian however it was very much so free lance and we didn't spend a great amount of time in the office. A typical meeting at the office included strategizing with designers / other photographers on the brand side for new projects as well as existing projects with local Berkeley businesses. Being student-run, there's a fantastic workplace culture at The Daily Californian that is both hardworking and lighthearted.

Great way to get a start
|
Working at the Daily Cal is a great way to get your foot in the door of print journalism. After writing for the Daily Californian, I received an offer to write a piece for the LA Times.

Great place
|
Good community where students are encouraged to write and be taken seriously for their work. I enjoyed my time and the opportunity to publish my writing.

Great experience, excellent culture
|
The Daily Cal is a UC Berkeley staple and an award-winning media company which has done a great job transitioning from primarily print news to online coverage with only a part-time student staff.
Working there is a privilege and the culture reflects that feeling. Everyone is grateful and happy to have the opportunity to flex their muscles as journalists or business people.
Great place to get a start in media and advertising if you are up at Cal!

Seemed to lack strong leadership
|
I would recommend working at the Daily Cal for a lower-classman at UC Berkeley. It functions more as a club. It seemed to lack strong leadership and direction and was very much an "it is what you make of it" type of situation.

Great opportunity for students to build professional ethic and network.
|
Everyday is a hustle between managing students and bringing in new and existing business. The staff are hard working and very intelligent. Making the commute from SF to Berkeley is not ideal but not bad either.

Another typical student-run organization
|
On the Daily Californian, the most difficult aspect of the job was that they expected you at attention at all times, without much of a warning. Sometimes we had as few as 8 hours in which to complete an assignment, which involved reading the article, figuring out which aspect to illustrate, coming up with a design, and executing it. It was very fast-paced, but frustratingly, the students in charge also didn't seem to trust the illustrators enough to believe in their work. There were occurrences when I worked diligently on an illustration, just to be told last-minute that it wouldn't be run, or that it would be put "on the web." Not recommended for those who hold a personal stake in their work, but also not surprising considering it is, ultimately, student-run.

Fun, productive workplace, those in high places have hidden agendas
|
Loved the clients, the office, the coworkers are positive and helpful, and the location. (UC campus). The board of directors have a hidden agenda and then usually terminate employees that 'know too much.' There was an interim publisher who displayed behavior that can be characterized as homophobic, and discriminatory about age.
