I loved my time at The Daily Californian however it was very much so free lance and we didn't spend a great amount of time in the office. A typical meeting at the office included strategizing with designers / other photographers on the brand side for new projects as well as existing projects with local Berkeley businesses. Working there is a privilege and the culture reflects that feeling. Everyone is grateful and happy to have the opportunity to flex their muscles as journalists or business people. Great place to get a start in media and advertising if you are up at Cal! Everyday is a hustle between managing students and bringing in new and existing business. The staff are hard working and very intelligent. Sometimes we had as few as 8 hours in which to complete an assignment, which involved reading the article, figuring out which aspect to illustrate, coming up with a design, and executing it. It was very fast-paced, but frustratingly, the students in charge also didn't seem to trust the illustrators enough to believe in their work. There were occurrences when I worked diligently on an illustration, just to be told last-minute that it wouldn't be run, or that it would be put "on the web." Not recommended for those who hold a personal stake in their work, but also not surprising considering it is, ultimately, student-run. (UC campus). The board of directors have a hidden agenda and then usually terminate employees that 'know too much.'
