Working at the Targum exposed me to the ins and outs of putting together a daily publication, which can be hard to find as a college student. It provided room to grow, leadership opportunities and skills that can be used in most communications jobs.

The hours can be long, but that is made clear from the start.

There is no better place to gain on-site, direct experience and perfect your craft in journalism. Working for this place teaches you things journalism classes simply can't. I grew so much as a writer, editor, producer, designer and content analyst from my three years working at the Targum. I started out as a contributing writer until I was on staff, and then I was promoted to a paid correspondent before becoming sports editor. Whether you're on the fence of pursuing a career in journalism or not, my overall work experience gained from here has helped me more than any internship I've had, from journalism to business administration.

The experience is undoubtedly rewarding, but it's a full-time commitment. As sports editor, it was hard balancing my full-time student obligations and social life with 40-plus hours a week in the editorial office, travel, deadlines, late nights and stress. But I knew that was going to come with the job, and I left it knowing I could conquer anything else that came after it once my time at the Targum was up.

When I was on the editorial board and even before that as I came up the ranks, the relationship with business is so important. The future of the Targum almost fell through because business and editorial weren't seeing eye to eye. It improved during the transition, but that simply has to be a good working relationship before anything else.
