Absolutely love working here. They live their values in everything they do.
|
|
The company culture is super friendly, when one of us succeeds, the whole company celebrates! Even during the pandemic, the executives have focused on socializing and collaborating as much as possible. I also love the mission statement of the company; that they are an independent newspaper trying to find an even-handed approach to news. They definitely have criticism from both sides of the aisle, but that is the truest sign of moderation.
|
It is a small company, so opportunities are somewhat limited.

Clicks at expense of community

none I can think of

We are encouraged to create clickbait material that is intentionally inflammatory in order to drive traffic to an operation that loses money. Creating divisions within the Jewish community is encouraged.

Cool location, nice office, nothing else
|
Horrible culture. Learn absolutely nothing while being in the office for 5+ months and actively asking for work. Management is non existent. People promise and forget very soon. Never involve you in meetings and important emails. The maximum you will do is ship out packages and help with small office work. And while money is the only reason to stay (min wage), I wish I quit earlier.

Sadly going downhill
|
|
Nice colleagues, paper has a name that used to be respected, office is pretty nice too and in a cool location.
|
Bad company culture, underpays and does not treat employees well, especially women. Very focused on creating content that will get traffic to the site but not focused on it being high quality. Not very respected anymore in the media world.

Legal and Classified Advertising Manager
|

Before the turnover, everyone was very friendly, energetic and helpful. I had people to ask advice from as well as an office to close the door and get work done. I really enjoyed interacting with the clients and helping design minor advertisement campaigns.
|
There was often not enough to do and I found myself asking other departments if they needed any kind of assistance. Some of the clients were quite rude and persistent as I also worked the entire matchmaker sections which consisted mostly of people who didn't use computers.
Eventually when the turnover happened, the new marketing managers had completely different ideas and didn't care for anything other than negative reinforcements.

Ask advice, or at least don't belittle the people who have been working here years before you. Further, don't hound on one topic after it has been discussed and finalized.

Run away.
|
|
Interesting people. Good amount of time off. Nice location. Especially if you are on the editorial side, there may be some good opportunities for you. If you are on the editorial side, you may be largely sheltered from the business side of things.
|
These cons apply only to the business side of the org (so not if you are a writer or editor):
-Misogynistic managers
-If you are a woman, it's best not to talk at meetings.
-Everyone is looking to leave.
-Don't believe anything managers say unless you have it in writing.
-A culture of presenteeism: if you didn't do it after 5pm, it didn't happen.
-The preservation of hierarchy is put ahead of the mission of the organization.
-Higher-ups will take credit for your work.
-Don't try hard, no one will notice.
-Be prepared to have people blame and yell at you for others mistakes.

The culture of the company is in the toilet. Everyone hates working there (again, on the business side, editorial may be different), and the only thing that keeps things running at all is a culture of fear. Maybe try investing in and rewarding people instead of looking for every possible way to short-change your employees.
