The management and employees were supportive and open to change. I was challenged on a daily basis to change the culture from a Sole Proprietor run business to a Corporate environment. Like all change the steps at first were a challenge but one I readily accepted and grew into a culture of an open door policy within the business units. After reduced their budget year over year and still can not hit the goals that they send to corporate. You are expected to work until the job is finished regardless of time for a below industry standard salary and use your personal vehicle. No working office equipment in remote office. You get written up or terminated without explanation. You need to be available 24/7 even on vacation time. Upper management has favorites. Working at The Press enables one to have a front-row seat to what that means for a small-market publication. On a typical day, a person is expected to file one or two stories while working on longer-term projects, while also being available to be reassigned to fill in any of the number of unfilled vacancies that have cropped up over recent years. Circulation has also plummeted in recent years, from a high of around 100,000 at the turn of the century, to around 40,000 more recently. Pay is commiserate with the region, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and about 15-20 percent less than other publications around the state. Good luck getting paid more -- the last company-wide salary increases were handed out in March 2008, nearly a decade ago. Consequently the workplace culture is a little stressful. People are typically hired out of college, work a couple years, and either quit or reassigned. The publication has consolidated offices and closed down its Atlantic City and statehouse offices, while also trimming management, so opportunities for advancement are somewhere between limited and non-existent.
