Great Management
|
I truly enjoyed working for the Press of AC. The management and employees were supportive and open to change. I was challenged on a daily basis to change the culture from a Sole Proprietor run business to a Corporate environment. Like all change the steps at first were a challenge but one I readily accepted and grew into a culture of an open door policy within the business units. This was due to constant presence, support of senior management and availability at all levels in the organization.

Not the best experience
|
Typical newspaper with declining readership- unreasonable deadlines and not enough support. I was a student intern, but they literally gave me 30 minutes to write a 1,000 word article.

On the brink of closing
|
Bad leadership, most of them are completely incompetent at their jobs and should not be in charge of staff or a budget. After reduced their budget year over year and still can not hit the goals that they send to corporate. The newspaper industry is down but this property for BHMedia which will be owned by Lee Enterprises (in a few weeks) is miss managed.

If you want to work long hours with little compensation this is the job for you.
|
You are expected to work until the job is finished regardless of time for a below industry standard salary and use your personal vehicle. No working office equipment in remote office. You get written up or terminated without explanation. You need to be available 24/7 even on vacation time. Upper management has favorites. No incentives.

Terrible
|
It was a great paper with experienced leaders when I started years ago. But after its sale it became a corporate joke with people more worried about saving their own jobs than the product.

Heart in the right place
|
The Press is a company trying to do its best to make it in a rough area in dying industry. This leads to lots of people fleeing for greener pastures and a lack of job security.

The ship is sinking and nobody knows what to do
|
You know the drill already, probably: the newspaper industry is sinking and have no real plans in place to transition to a viable future. Working at The Press enables one to have a front-row seat to what that means for a small-market publication.
On a typical day, a person is expected to file one or two stories while working on longer-term projects, while also being available to be reassigned to fill in any of the number of unfilled vacancies that have cropped up over recent years.
Circulation has also plummeted in recent years, from a high of around 100,000 at the turn of the century, to around 40,000 more recently.
Pay is commiserate with the region, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and about 15-20 percent less than other publications around the state. Good luck getting paid more -- the last company-wide salary increases were handed out in March 2008, nearly a decade ago.
Consequently the workplace culture is a little stressful. People are typically hired out of college, work a couple years, and either quit or reassigned.
The publication has consolidated offices and closed down its Atlantic City and statehouse offices, while also trimming management, so opportunities for advancement are somewhere between limited and non-existent.
