Steep learning curve, little work-life balance

Getting to meet many people from different walks of life, learning new things, improving one's writing abilities.

Editors expect you to be on call almost 24/7, at least until your story gets published. Weekends are often used to conduct interviews etc., so little to no work-life balance.

Being nice to interns/junior reporters will make them want to do more work for you. Will never understand how some editors thought it was motivational to criticise unnecessarily or cast us in a bad light because of their mistakes.

ST exposes its interns to a whole slew of experiences – you'd never have to worry about being the intern that goes and make coffee or am left in admin duties. You will be stretched and tested continuously in a very hectic newsroom.

Because of the internship's robustness, it is either sink or swim. Interns are expected to hit the ground running immediately, and the work culture may not be very friendly towards them to due to the strong hierarchical system that places them at the bottom.

Fun, irregular hours

The community is fun and interesting; the work allows you to venture out of the office and learn all sorts of new things - Not a desk job.

Gets repetitive after a while, if you end up covering the same type of stories or events. Hours are irregular - usually start late, end late, sometimes really late. Sometimes might feel like you're working alone, not much working collaboration (but maybe that's also a good thing).

Unexpected work hours and workload as the schedule for your job only comes out the night before. Must also be prepared to standby on weekends but this only takes place once or twice in a month.
