Management attempts to save money by not filling needed circulation and reference positions whenever someone leaves. Low morale and high turnover creates stress on public-facing staff. Leadership is out of touch with the needs of patrons and staff alike, but clearly privileges any individual patron above staff retention. Management will always take the side of the patron, so be careful. Staff members are promoted rarely and based on idiosyncratic criteria. The customer service model for the library was promoted to us as "the Apple store," with corresponding levels of pushiness that we were supposed to impress on our users. However, a staff member was promoted despite regularly wearing earphones and listening to music when working a shift where we were supposed to be cold-approaching browsing patrons and asking them how we could help.
