Nice office space pre-covid. Opportunities to collaborate with an inspiring mix of external stakeholders. It's very disappointing to reflect on what has happened to the organization in recent years. USGBC's declining reputation is no secret and its frustrating to see that after spending a significant portion of your career here. It's no longer just an issue with the CEO. His controlling and toxic management style has been adopted by HR and others in his inner circle, resulting in a clear split between them and the rest of the organization who stay because despite everything else, they are motivated by the mission. Other reviews have already mentioned the large amount of turnover over the past few years including some significant leadership positions that have been pushed out, leaving the CEO with more control in each instance. When people leave the org doesn't recruit for those open positions. Remaining staff are left to manage the workload, despite requests to bring in more capacity. USGBC is the place. Driven by leaders with loads of energy! I have been working in the green building industry for over a decade now closely. 10+ years are with green building certification leaders like USGBC and others. I believe I am well qualified to share my opinion here. This is only my experience in the past few years with USGBC and its leaders, 'WITHOUT FILTER'. Biggest Pros: A clear communication by the leadership team on WHY do we do WHAT we do in realizing the vision of USGBC. Liberty to choose your line of work and dwell deeper with constant hand-holding and guidance by your immediate supervisors locally and from global leaders as well when needed. Your work and success is always on you. Failures with market limitations and skill limitations are addressed through constant feedback (As long as you are willing to improve and open for learning). Your manager always has your back. Any initiative / activity / Go-To-Market plan that addresses market transformation as a priority is given adequate support. Your idea, you have to own it, execute it and ensure it is successful - That's the Mantra you need to follow. You need something raise your hand and ask boldly. You have full access and liberty to seek any advise or guidance from the leadership teams. Never be surprised if the leadership team (Globally and Locally) makes itself available even during the middle of the night or on a weekend or even when they are hard pressed for time to extend their support. Such is their commitment towards their people and organization. Free and Fair access to both local and global leaders, at any point of time. Transparent feedback during the time of reviews with the leadership teams - Fair and Square. Innovation that drives market transformation is always the priority. Thanks to the leadership commitment to realize the vision of USGBC. The intent behind this opinion is for everyone to have a holistic look from across the globe. USGBC is not only driving sustainable built-environments in US (Which is a highly developed Country), there is a much wider world away from US, that is still developing and underdeveloped which aspires to grow and embrace the advancements from developed countries like US. USGBC with its leaders is trying to create a change by uplifting the built-environment in these countries as well. Precisely these are mass-markets where transformation can be brought in with multiple offerings in the built-environments at various price points. Having multiple product lines (Certification programs) allows stakeholders to engage with USGBC from all quarters of the globe. Isn't this the market transformation that we are looking at and aspiring for. This outlines the greater vision that USGBC and its leadership has for the rest of the world. India is among the top 5 countries contributing to the green building footprint globally under LEED program. Thanks to the leadership teams both Globally and Locally here in India for their vision for the built-environment. There is a constant innovation, that has been a priority in the organization from the past 5 to 6 years to cater to the larger industry needs. Today we are moving beyond buildings with latest additions like: ARC, LEED for Cities, TRUE, PEER, LEED ZERO, LIVING STANDARD, etc. These are the tools that can drive awareness and education at a mass market level. These are the tools which are great offerings that allows the industry to address much required built-environment challenges globally. I just cannot imagine the amount of engagement, education and inspiration that we are creating in various quarters of the globe with multiple engagement options through the above offerings. Thanks to the leadership team and fellow co-workers for sowing the seeds keeping in mind larger vision of the organization. We will reap what we sow in years to come. If we correlate it with our initial LEED program just for the buildings alone, when it was introduced in India way back in 2001. It took us more than 2 decades to get industry accept LEED for what it is today. Similarly these new offerings do need great nurturing for the industry to imbibe. As on organization at USGBC the market transformation we are aspiring for needs people from across the globe to drive. I am glad that the organization and its leaders are spending more time on this, so that the built-environment across the globe and USGBC as an organization are future ready for all the stakeholders involved. This is from a mass market perspective, we still have miles to cover in countries like India and rest of the developing and under-developed countries. Bottom line...By joining USGBC you are signing-up for being a change maker. So be patient enough to see the transformation. If your forte for life DOES NOT INCLUDE the following, this is not the place for you: 'Evaluating regularly WHY do we DO, WHAT we DO'. 'Patience to accept, live through and be part of a Change / Market Transformation'. 'Working in a Dynamic Environment'. 'Taking ownership of your work, Start-to-End'. 'Constant Innovation in your Go-To-Market'. 'Answering Hard Questions for building a better road-map in achieving your vision'. 'Open to Learning new skill set from your peers and leaders'. Of-course every organization has improvements to be made. We do not live in a perfect world after-all. There will be a constant scope for improvement as the times change and this is part of the process. Here are a few limitations, which I have seen: More concentration and marketing efforts needed in the markets that are evolving and are potential for the future. This is being addressed currently, but the ground team can be more aggressive. Can further strengthen reach-out activities to the bottom of the pyramid to address mass market in developing and under-developed countries. You might tend to lack motivation when working remotely sometimes, even-though you are committed to the vision. The solution here is to discuss with your manager and see how you can address this. Health benefits can be extended to Parents of the employees if possible. I believed in the past leadership (Before 2016) when I was an outsider contributing to green building industry. My belief has further strengthened on USGBC, its people and the vision through the eyes of current leadership (From 2016 to till date) after spending time directly and indirectly working with both the Local and Global leaders. In-fact, I would say, we need more of these new tools (ARC, LEED for Cities, TRUE, PEER, LEED ZERO, LIVING STANDARD, etc.) and metrics to create a level playing field for different countries, sectors and segments based on the markets that we address. USGBC has all the capacity to address this and it is shown through the offerings that have taken the organization across the globe. We need to continue experimenting and experiencing more and more markets (that are both likely known and totally unknown to us) to understand the dynamics involved and gain global perspectives that enables us to build not just a robust global organization but also an eco-system that can constantly innovate itself and thrive for a better future. I am glad that we are blessed with amazing leaders and co-workers at USGBC and GBCI, for running around and creating an impact that is making us future ready. Staff have few opportunities for growth and are micromanaged by the CEO and his team of followers. I have witnessed what USGBC used to be, and the people who work there are truly passionate. It's what keeps me at my job. But the recent toxic culture created by the CEO has made waking up for work everyday a challenge. He has pinned departments against each other, cut down teams for not supporting him enough, and passed hard work off as his own. We are all experts in our field. And we are hired for this very reason — why does he not support our careers and hard work, but expects us to blindly support him? He has openly shared privileged information about forcing long time employees out of the organization because they didn't agree with his strategy. USGBC is going under Supportive, creative coworkers who are stiffed by micromanagement, nepotism and few opportunities for growth. CEO is ruining the organization in every way possible. Staff is hemorrhaging, and those who are left have been crying out for help for months, reaching out to the USGBC/GBCI Board of Directors with a passionate, detailed letter outlining the years of abusive behavior by the CEO, Mahesh. A change.org petition has been signed by over 100+ members of the community who support the allegations highlighted in the letter. Yet, it seems that the Board is complacent (or scared) of the current CEO, and unwilling to take action. If change doesn't happen now, USGBC will fail miserably. But now I’m starting to question whether that will ever happen. Unless the board takes action, USGBC is going to experience a decline that cannot be overcome. There has been a mass exodus of staff for years because of poor leadership and chaotic working conditions. I won’t reiterate everything that has been said about the CEO, but I’ll say this, he continues to create a toxic work environment and pursue trendy passion projects that have no traction. He’s supposedly an “IT guy” yet instead of investing in improving LEED Online, he buys obscure rating systems. HR has strangled departments by not replacing staff, which has created unbearable workloads.
