Not really worth the expense...

Definitely useful having on your CV especially if you'd like to work internationally. If you take the initiative you can probably make a lot of things happen and get the chance for some meaningful experience.
|
The UN is extremely crusty as well as being basically run off the free labour of interns (and Geneva is way too expensive to live in without a salary). I never received much useful feedback so whilst it was useful to work independently it's not like I was working with any kind of experts who could give me guidance. You might feel like it's an achievement to be picked for an internship there but if you haven't got funding i.e. if you're funding yourself it's really not worth it. Plus I still barely know what the UN does.

-offers an opportunity to see how the UN operates and if it's your thing
-friendly working environment (at least in my team)
-comparatively calm and less stressful than some other organizations
|
-the work is monotonous and sometimes very boring
-it depends on your supervisor how much responsibility you'll have: some interns get exploited, others don't learn much in 6 months
-unpaid: in a city like Geneva it is almost impossible to survive without some stipend/scholarship unless you have rich parents
