Great People, Great Mission
|
|
The org is fighting the good fight and has shored up a lot of loose ends to really hone in on what matters - helping improve the lives of people with SCI. After being mainly focused on the east coast for a long time, the org has done a great job of expanding west and building a national membership. The staff is dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate.

Limited resources and staff sometimes make it difficult to fully realize visions. Not having everyone under one roof every day can complicate things.

Being a person with a disability and working for an organization that caters to individuals with disabilities they understand the difficulties that go along with that and are really empathetic. I also get to work doing something meaningful that helps people with disabilities.

Together, we have great impacts on the lives of individuals living with paralysis in its many iterations, their family members and care givers, not to mention the greater community of SCI/D clinicians and other professionals. At United Spinal your individual skillset is utilized and appreciated.

Sometimes it is challenging to work remotely where in-person communications can be more effective more quickly. But, United Spinal leverages many available technology 'tools' to bring together our telecommuting staff with our office-based staff. Our system-wide and highly interactive phone system helps to expedite our communications. And, periodic video-chat department meetings and in-person events help to keep our work relationships and productivity high.

My advice to management is to actively plan for employee input on work relationship building and focus upon the end-goals of our initiatives. Welcoming the employee input when offered is great, setting periodic way-points to solicit such input may be even more productive.

Hard-working, intelligent management and staff
|

Employees really care and use their talents to advance the mission of improving quality of life of people with spinal cord injuries and disorders. Several on staff are wheelchair users, which helps keep the work authentic.
|
There have been some growing pains as the organization has expanded from regional to national in reach. After some turnover in management and on the board, the company now seems on the right track.
