Great colleagues and important content is produced. Poor marks for retention. Senior management pays a lot of lip service to "challenging the status quo" and recognizing employee value, but doesn't take much action to improve the station of junior staff members. The team across the board is respectful, collaborative, and constructive, and the upper management is always open and available to one's queries and needs. Interesting authors and great books, though production values have declined for the past few years. Good benefits. The management -- the Director and Deputy Director created a toxic work environment, transforming a storied academic press into a pseudo-corporate publisher without the cash flow. The Director often "works" from home and games the UC travel reimbursement policies to cover personal travel. The Director, after presiding over several rounds of layoffs, revenue short falls, and constant budget-tightening, wore her Louboutin stilettos to the office. Without irony. This let-them-eat-cake attitude was of a piece with the Director's railing against long-time employees who hoped to offset their low salaries (some as low as $35-40K) with modest UC pension benefits in retirement. Interesting that the Director herself stuck around long enough to be vested in the UC pension system. Speaking of shoes, the (incompetent) Deputy Director accessorized her improbable 15-year rise through the ranks with ever-higher heels. Laughable that this unqualified person oversaw all revenue generation -- with no relevant background, experience, or raw talent in sales, marketing, fundraising, or management. Hire a new director deeply rooted in academia. Given the challenging revenue environment for scholarly publishing, reduce the layers of bureaucracy and management. Invest in acquiring editors, editorial assistants, designers, and production editors. The books that are published. Health Benefits Flexible hours Toxic work environment. Entire departments get blamed for budget short falls when in reality, every department is so short staffed that the entire company can't function healthily. Almost everyone suffers, especially Editorial Assistants. Some departments would not be able to function at all without work studies/interns. Don't expect manageable workloads. I did not meet a member of staff I didn't like. There's a lot of opportunity to oversee different departments if you're not sure what aspect of publishing you want to go into. Sometimes in my department my work was repetitive, and I often felt like I wasn't being given challenging work.
