Just a good work culture to be involved with. I never ran into a person I didn't like. They also provide training in your field as well as accounts on some of the more well known online training sites to help you out.

Work from home (during pandemic)

It was good to work from home during the pandemic. The time I had for commuting was given back by telecommuting which was a relief. My team had daily team meetings which reassured me how UC San Diego would proceed in regards to COVID-19, how the students may be impacted and what we as employees were able to help. Working with other managers that worked at UC San Diego for a decade or two was very pleasant. My daily tasks were micromanaged from day one

Worked there for 2 years and It all depends on who you work for. Some supervisors are great while others have little patience and understanding. I do agree though that they have taken serious COVID precautions to protect workers.

Good health benefits is the only consistent good aspect

Anyone who's worked here long enough knows to ask around about what are the toxic departments and people to avoid, if they wish to remain and move around for advancement purposes, or to get away from an existing toxic environment. What can I say, management sets the tone for any organization and our current chancellor was sued was a senior staff person for discrimination. The lawsuit has been settled, so the person got some monetary settlement. It's a very large organization, so it's a matter of luck if you land in a hospitable setting or crazy setting, in terms of boss and co-workers. But I've experienced and heard enough horror stories. There's a lot of lip service given to employee retention and job satisfaction, but there is also a lot of entrenched bias and discrimination because managers and higher-ups can act with impunity if they have enough clout and/or bring in $$ to the university through research grants or other efforts. Faculty and senior people can treat staff and students like serfs and little is done about it.

Great place to work and have good benefits for medical, retirement and decent pay. Our department you make about 20k in OT, but we work holidays, weekends and sometimes double or triple shifts.

Great academic environment, great health system
|
I worked in labs, which of course is different than working in HR or other departments (so your mileage may vary). But I always enjoyed the environment and my direct supervisor was a very upbeat person and a great listener. I was paid well, considering the type of work I did. It was also great to be automatically included in the university 403(b) plan.
