I am happy here
|

I feel as though I have a lot of lifelong friends at UPshow and for a smaller organization, I have a sense of belonging. I care about my work and about our customers. Many reviews in the past reference the previous re-org. I can confidently say that since the re-org occurred last Fall, things for me have drastically improved. I have an extremely attentive manager who has helped me beyond words and I am truly grateful for him. My day-to-day became so much more organized, clearer, and structured. I can go to him for help when I need it and I don't feel as though I am bothering him or annoying him, which is very unlike my previous manager. My manager has my back and is supportive and kind. Relationships with fellow departments have improved as well. I think everything has been really night and day, and I would advise those reading reviews to consider that there has been a LOT of positive strides from leadership I have witnessed over the past year. Overall, I cannot really complain. I am happy with where most things are nowadays.

There has been some impact to travel budget and spend policies with the market conditions but this is to be expected. The company turned profitable with its change in spending and right-sizing of the team relatively quickly.

Exceptional Chicago Technology Company; Strong Leadership; Great Experience Thus Far

I've been working at UPshow for a bit now and the CEO and other co-founder have always listened to me and taken my advice. I feel "heard" in my role and I have good exposure and lines of communication to leadership. The company has grown considerably since I started and has a meaningful vision. I really agree with the vision the CEO has shared and its quite simple - use technology to help businesses connect with their customers and employees more effectively. There have been new and valuable product launches (i.e. products that engage front-line staff and employees) in addition to the core customer engagement tools. Thus, the company is adapting and evolving nicely in my opinion. The CEO held a state of the union meeting with all current employees recently and was transparent about everything happening. He shared an update on business performance, profitability, fundraising, the economy and how reviews/compensation will be handled at year-end. I appreciated the communication and transparency. The work policy which called for 2 mandatory days in office each week was made more flexible now - pretty much remote and flexible at our discretion outside of 3 team office visits per month. This is more flexible than most company policies that I have heard from friends and family. I am enjoying my experience here and I know that many other employees do. I would recommend working here!

There were recently layoffs. This was of course difficult. Some of the resultant post layoff reviews are downright mean spirited and inaccurate in my opinion. I do think the company can grow to be more diverse. I know that diversity is important to leadership, but its hard to waive a magic wand and make it happen overnight. HR has taken steps to help with diversity training and other initiatives.

Don't waste your talent there

The employees rowing the boat can be great.

There is a significant problem with the leadership at this company. The CEO is completely unhinged, lacks strategic vision and does not care about employees. Anything he wants will happen regardless of data or feedback. No one wanted the hybrid work policy, but the CEO did...so guess what happened? RIP flexible work schedule. There's a mentality that if the CEO can't see you in person, you aren't working or doing a good job. Funny when half the team is in another country. No amount of bad free lunches, ice cream socials, happy hours when people get let go and other forced activities will make up for the way the back to office policy was handled. I've never worked for an organization that so blatantly had interoffice politics at play. If you aren't an UPshow lifer, you will be treated very differently and your opportunity to advance within the company will suffer. There is also no diversity within the company whatsoever. The benefits are not great. The product is mediocre at best, but leadership doesn't want their egos hurt to admit the issues and fix them. If you value your work and consider yourself a decent human I would avoid working here at all costs. It can be hard interviewing and you always think people are scorned who write reviews, but trust what you are hearing and read between the lines. You'll be glad you did.

Beware of inexperience leaders
|

The product can be fun to work on.

If you've read some of the other recent reviews, you can see there was a recent layoff. I'm writing this review because of the responses from leadership to those reviews are comical. They call it a re-organization-- it was not. It was just mass layoffs of good employees. Literally, some of the best talent I've ever worked with are now gone and it had everything to do with money. To keep existing employees from not jumping ship, they threw some promotions out-- so I guess that's a "re-org". The flexible schedule/ remote work policy they claim is not accurate. If by flexible you mean, completely mandated. I'm not sure if management knows the definition of flexible. They force employees in on Tuesday/Thursday, but then willy nilly change the days based on when there's a customer coming in or whenever they want. People plan their lives, childcare, dog walkers, etc around the set schedule and they expect you to change everything constantly. There was no survey asking for employee feedback and when they did a survey (probably at the beginning of the year), they did NOT listen to the actual feedback. The CEO wanted people in the office and that's what happened. I've built many strong relationships remotely - the entire Dev team is in another country and somehow we can work with them just fine. But if you live in Chicago, get in the office to "build a meaningful culture". At the end of the day they mandate an office because they do not trust their employees. Apparently they value diversity and state that "our people are the most valuable asset". There is ZERO diversity in the company. It's convenient that a few positive reviews have been posted after a bunch of negative. I assure you that the people who let go aren't just "scorned" from the layoff and their reviews are true and felt by many people within the team.
