This company will take advantage of and exploit you and your good nature to "forward the mission". You will be constantly stressed, overworked, given unrealistic goals, and made to feel inadequate at every turn. Management actively makes you feel bad about having a family and needing to take time off. Management is invasive to your personal life and family time. Leadership will send emails and ask you to not work while on leave but turn around and call you constantly while you are on PTO. They knowingly allow hourly employees to work over their allotted hours without asking them to put in overtime. Leadership guilts anyone who puts anything above the mission. Leadership commends people for never using paid time off. They also commend employees for working weeks/months straight without any days off at double or triple their allotted hours. Salaried employees will rarely receive additional compensation or extra time off when working 10-30+ extra hours. They question your loyalty and deny you promotions if you use your PTO too much or ever express discomfort with being asked to work many hours above your 40 hours week. There isn't much room for advancement, but the USO does have a "university" geared toward career development. There is lot of job satisfaction and management ensures that staff receives recognition and praise for their efforts. It was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed this job while we were stationed in Okinawa from 1996 to 1999. My husband was in the US Air Force. The United Services Organization (USO) facility helps military families and individuals cope with their travel requirements by providing food, rest and relaxation between deployments or stations of duty. The volunteers who work around the clock are either former military or have family members who served our country. Empathy goes a long way when dealing with so many guests of various backgrounds here. Safety is the key in keeping the USO running smoothly. The hardest part about being a volunteer is monitoring who may or my not use the facility, and being able to screen visitors who wish to enter at all hours of the day or night, and documenting everything that happens. The surveillance cameras help staff view the facility in real time and serves as an evidence base for any incident reports that volunteers are required to complete when anomalies occur. Overall, the USO is a great place to work! 24 hours of operation provide flexible scheduling for volunteers.
