The mentorship in entrepreneurship is invaluable. Great way to expand your professional network. Culture aims to be diverse but can stifling/exclusive to those who don't think like the majority. Sharing rooms during travel was challenging. Use of too many platforms to communicate and record work often created sense of "too many meetings, too much repeat work, little time to actually get things done." 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 4.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 1062074 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 May 7th, 2021 10:10PM May 7th, 2021 10:10PM Venture for America

private:ventureforamerica https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1062074 Aug 4th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Venture for America Manager New York, NY Culture issues run deep It's an intriguing concept. That is all. That photo of Andrew Yang dispensing whipped cream into the open mouths of his kneeling campaign staffers was a pretty good summary of the VFA culture. (Yang founded VFA) The application process for VFA staff (and fellows!) is brutal, and potentially more difficult than just getting a job at a startup on your own. The pay is certainly less than if you worked directly for a startup. In the hiring process, you really have to jump through hoops. Several projects are non-negotiable. Infer from that what you will able how they treat peoples' time. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 5.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1062074 Open Get off your high horse. You are a non-profit, not a startup. You are not Teach for America. Your fellows have extremely polarizing experiences in the program. Listen to them (and BTW-- they talk!). 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 May 7th, 2021 10:10PM May 7th, 2021 10:10PM Venture for America

private:ventureforamerica https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1062074 Dec 31st, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Venture for America Fellow Over-romanticized startup life, less substance than expected - As a fellow, the network is by far the most valuable component of the fellowship. You'll have access to 150+ like-minded people who are passionate about life and what they're working on. You'll have to be proactive about making friends and developing connections, though, because VFA does not prioritize inter-fellow connections nearly enough at training camp or afterward. - Good for people who want to avoid the corporate path straight out of college but aren't sure how to get a foot in the door at smaller companies - If you need to leave your company, the network is invaluable in helping you to find another job and land on your feet quickly. VFA also provides great support when this happens. - VFA does a great job of selling you an *idea* of startups and marketing a glamorous startup life. They do a poor job of preparing you for the reality of the work. - Most fellows are overworked and underpaid. It's not unusual to work 50-60 hours per week (or more) at a salary of $38,000. VFA does not emphasize the true difficulty of the work beforehand. - The minimum salary of $38k does not change city-to-city, meaning some fellows must deal with higher costs of living in a place like Philadelphia, while others can live more comfortably in places like Birmingham or Cleveland. - The "city revitalization" component of the mission is minimal in practice. Few opportunities for social involvement are made available, so make sure you're proactive about getting involved in your city if that's an important feature of the fellowship for you. - Some of the VFA jobs are gems, but far too many companies use the fellowship program as a way to take advantage of talented high-achievers at a below-market salary. It feels as though VFA does a poor job of vetting each company and is more focused on getting as many companies on board as possible, especially as the number of fellows grows rapidly year-to-year. This causes a large amount of turnover in the first year as fellows change companies. - Generally feels like components of the VFA mission are sacrificed in the name of hitting metrics. Fundraising is the main priority (understandably, since VFA is a nonprofit), which can lead to poor fellow placements at companies that contribute to VFA but are otherwise unaligned with the mission (i.e. do not have integrity in all things, do not provide jobs that reflect fellows' values). 0.0 NO_OPINION 17.0 2.0 2.0 3.0 4.0 1.0 3.0 1062074 Open - Focus more on developing connections between fellows, especially at training camp. I won't remember 75% of the PowerPoint lectures I sat through, but I'll remember the connections I developed. - A commitment to helping fellows develop roots in their cities is important. I see too many complete their 2-years and then flee to SF/LA/NY, etc. Many of the VFA cities experience brain drain for a reason. Focus more on getting fellows involved/connected. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 0.0 May 7th, 2021 10:10PM May 7th, 2021 10:10PM Venture for America
