I have never been in an environment where everyone is tied together with a common thread of passion for our mission. Verto has had a lots of growth over the last 2 years, but has been creative and focused on the students we serve in each step. As we start to exit intense COVID times, there are lots of improvements in programming, work/life balance and intensity. The mission is great, but not thought through well. The management seems to know very little about the implementing values they espouse. There is no continuity of purpose or methods among the leadership. Also, some people are hired as directors and leaders who are unprepared, unsupported, and inexperienced in their roles. As faculty, I lived with students, other staff, and faculty in a foreign country. The lack of infrastructure and support erodes the quality of education. I am a very committed educator who invested months of preparation in learning about the culture and history of the location, but Verto makes promises and then lays off employees at will. Asking faculty to leave home for a semester to teach, and then suddenly laying off a whole team, and then making zero attempts to place us in another location, is heartless. Working for Verto is demanding, but the management has no appreciation for the dedicated faculty. I loved working with my teammates, but the executive leadership is seriously problematic. The exec team believes in toxic positivity and breeds a culture of brown nosing to be appreciated or promoted at work. I truly loved my team, and I met some amazing co-workers, but the leadership at the top is ensuring that the mission and vision are far from the ground realities and the experience of the employees. Unfortunately, poor decision making has ousted some of the very best employees and has created a messy period of growth for this start-up. There is constant turnover across the organization. The programming and academics teams are managed extraordinarily poorly at the executive leadership level, and thus, key facets of the organization have fallen to the wayside (such as faculty assessment, student learning, and student experience). The faculty and staff on the ground are surely wonderful, though it is challenging and chaotic to be in their roles when there is no framework created by upper-level management. This chaos trickles down to the student experience. I strongly recommend that Verto invests in professionalism and leadership training for those in executive leadership positions (particularly the highest level of leadership in Programming and Academics). Employees thrive under excellent leadership, especially in a start-up atmosphere that is fast-paced, often requires working over hours, and provides low pay. Verto has burned through a lot of great leaders and is currently lacking good leadership. I hope Verto can take the initiative to improve, because the company's goals are admirable.
