private:videa https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=884097 Jan 26th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Videa Software Engineer Atlanta, GA A Bright Start and a Dim Future Leadership team does honestly wish for the best Great technology base Pay & Benefits tend to be great, though some benefits have gotten worse over the years, they are still better than most places. The realities of the business (it still operates at a loss), the hiring freeze in Technology due to the sales process, as well as the most likely result of that sales process results in a very dim future: 1. Major downsizing through attrition in technology from its start in 2018, and and increased dependence on offshore resources resulted in increased workload for onshore team members 2. Again, due to above, most new projects are allocated to offshore resources, and will probably be for the foreseeable future. 3. The brain drain effect is real The reality is that Videa operates at a loss heavily subsidized from its corporate parent, though those losses have been less and less every year. With the loss of that subsidy, they will have to raise prices (unlikely, considering there's already downward pressure on pricing, especially with the loss of CoxReps as a corporate sister and CMG as a corporate parent) or cut costs (the major cost to cut being staffing). Videa will not survive in its current form, and the new Videa will be a much smaller company that will not be a great place to work, especially for non-management Tech employees (I can definitely seeing them being over-worked without the capacity to actually take on new fun projects, a trend that already started, especially in the later months of 2019) -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 7.0 3.0 2.0 4.0 1.0 2.0 3.0 884097 Open Videa, at this point, does not have a compelling story in the marketplace of why anyone would use them versus other vendors: Campaign Performance is a major driver of why agencies choose to route orders to Videa, but Videa honestly doesn't have a compelling buy-side product offering that makes it "sticky". Once the buy side vendors (MediaOcean, Freewheel, Hudson) decide to compete with you on this, you will lose ALL of the reason why an agency would prefer Videa over sending orders directly to the Reps or Stations Videa has the capability of being a better Medialine or Reppak for the Rep Firms, or an equivalent service for self-repped Station Groups, but Videa never really positioned themselves as providing that service to the Reps, and Videa will probably pay for it. Using Videa requires more work in many cases than using alternatives (since you have to do the work in both traffic and Videa), and Videa has yet to provide a compelling answer to this, even though the technology teams identified what it would take to reduce some of this, it was mostly ignored by senior management. This will come back and bite Videa in the rear, especially as they lost a lot of their in house resources that had the ideas that were being ignored. One of the dumbest things you can do is put a HIRING FREEZE in TECHNOLOGY at a TECH STARTUP. It's basically the beginning of a slow death spiral. Plus the plan to essentially have only a skeleton crew of tech resources in house overseeing contract resources offshore? Yeah, that's idiotic. Contract resources might be technologically knowledgeable, they have very little in terms of independent research into what's going on the industry or new ideas to make existing products better for the industry or Videa (and not talking about UI tweaks or performance improvements, but new product lines that will make Videa more compelling). Product and SLT (especially the more senior staff) isn't versed well enough into Videa's technology capabilities to know what is even possible with minimal investment, instead preferring to build out things that are technically expensive to build with little improvement of (Why should I use Videa instead of just using WO Connect, Medialine, or Reppack? (as a station/rep) And why should I send orders to Videa when I can send them to WO Connect or the Reps directly, since my existing tools already provide Videa's capabilities and work on more than just US-based broadcast TV. So while I see Videa probably continuing to exist, probably with more revenue than today, and maybe even becoming profitable at some point, it will be a very different Videa, and it definately won't be a fun tech company to work at. It already wasn't (7 full time engineers on 2 very small teams a technology company does not make), and the pain was self-inflicted. Now, as a side note, I don't blame the low level management, since their hands were equally tied, and would probably agree. I also don't blame Shereta, she's been the kindest leader I've ever worked under, I don't think she realized how much certain decisions were screwing things over and making Videa unpleasant to work at as a technologist. I was really hoping that the sales process would go well and Videa would be able to become an independent Atlanta tech company with a strong technology department, but its already lost its standing as an Atlanta tech company, since their technology is mostly built overseas by people who don't really understand the industry realities AT ALL. Your loss Videa. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 4.0 May 8th, 2021 07:11AM May 8th, 2021 07:11AM Videa
