Videology came into my life at a time when I’d grown so worn out by the cold and listless world of freelance staffing gigs that I honestly felt like I couldn’t relate to human beings anymore, because I was just a number, and didn’t matter. Then one day that all changed when my wife Asta tipped me off to a Facebook ad from the one and only Videology: they were looking for a barback. Boy did I go after that position with abandon! A couple interviews later, I’d proven myself enough that they let me train and eventually start working full shifts by myself. A year later, Asta got hired as a server, starting a cute husband/wife working relationship we’d already kinda nailed with our production company. This bar made me feel like I mattered - not just as a bartender, but as a cinephile, a hustling actor/filmmaker and a member of a warm film community. The staff here was my family. The venue itself has served as a comfy screening room of earnest indie efforts and as a crucial location for two short films at Abandoned House Productions, including THE SHADOW SCARF, which features me as a bartender, hiding from the big scary world. Sometimes life shakes you up like this so you can get a better grip on it. I won’t pretend I was ready to let go - not when I’d intended to return long after I’d moved on, screening my movies, telling stories to James and Wendy about where I was in life, asking if they still made my favorite cocktails (I’m a DEERHUNTER man), and just seeing movies and getting all romantic about them. No, this hurts. Here was a place that let people celebrate their favorite films day in and day out, building a community as a result. Nostalgia isn’t just about the past; it’s about knowing what’s good and celebrating it in the present. Let’s pass that lesson down as we carry on into the future.
