Management vs Employees

|
- When it comes to the overall company, everyone is usually very kind to one another especially when it comes to mental well being or just having a good time at a company gathering via zoom.
- The CEO knows everyone and he is always sending really fun emails to everyone and they have been quite enjoyable during the pandemic.
- Overall, the biggest pro is the people that work for this company. They work hard for little wages.
- Bonuses happen every year especially we do well but there's a con to this.

So here are some cons:
- While bonuses are great, this is their excuse to not give anyone raises. If you are planning to work here, be sure to negotiate your salary early on as that might be your own wage until they provide the typical "cost of living wage" or they feel "nice" enough to provide a salary raise.
- No one gets fired even if you are a really bad boss or not nice to your employees. I've heard of people being retaliated on and even being treated poorly by their managers and no one gets fired. Everyone continues to turn a blind eye to management even if they do poorly because for some reason, that's better to do than provide a safe and growing environment for their employees.
- There is no such thing as a good promotion. If you get a promotion, congratulations, its just a title change, a small raise but nothing else changes. You don't really move up. You just stay in the exact same hierarchy.
- The higher ups refuse to address anything that involves racism to their internal teams and I believe its due to their response to BLM in the summer. They sent out a public statement but made no statement internally and were called out for it. Now instead of really trying, they've decided to make no statement even though recently, Asian Americans are being hurt in the bay area and last I checked, we are a manga and anime publisher. Our community and employees is majority Asian and Asian American. Its truly unfortunate to see. I have respect to the employees who have made a DEI group that combats this behavior. Its hard to see that its basically management vs employees at this company.

Fire managers who are ruining teams especially if they retaliate on their employees. Try to care about your employees by providing an update to their well being. Even an internal note from higher ups feels like you care.
Provide a decent starting salary (nothing below 48,000) if you intend to only give bonuses. The Bay Area is expensive.

This company has a lot of potential, but it rarely lives up to its potential in the ways that matter most

The company does incredible work. Its employees are passionate about manga, anime, and creating excellent products/content. There are a lot of opportunities to engage with great written and animated content.
|
VIZ has a poor track record with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are very few Black and Latinx employees at the company, and the company culture caters to its middle-aged/older employees, which leaves younger employees feeling alienated. The executive leadership team is not diverse, nor are they well-versed in leading a modern company. Growth opportunities are few and far between, and the office culture can occasionally fall prey to cliques and favoritism. It is very easy to professionally stagnate at VIZ and many talented employees end up leaving simply because they are not given the opportunity to advance and grow.

Grow with the times and invest in your employees no matter what their ages or racial backgrounds are. Also, hire more racially diverse candidates. The lack of diversity at VIZ is a reflection of problematic publishing industry practices that continue to create systemic inequality and barriers for people with marginalized identities.
Mentor employees at all levels and establish 360 employee reviews so that bullying, favoritism, and prejudices do not harm employees and their ability to grow professionally.

Finally found a place to call home

1. Everyone on staff cares for your wellness, whether it's HR, your manager, or even the CEO has personally texted me and ensured my career started off great at Viz.
2. Creative outlet, this company allows you to try new things without repercussions, do you want to be on a podcast? yes go for it, do you want to donate your time to a cause or a charity? yes go for it!
3. Do you want to be a part of a community in the office, even though the office might be closed due to a shelter in place order? Yes, everyone wants to feel connected, whether its on Slack or google hang outs, everyone feels its a safe space to learn and be a part of something bigger than yourself.

1. I honestly can't think of anything, I guess, if you're new to Japanese culture or Japanese products, it's a little tough to understand some discussion at times, but just being polite and asking and learning will be appreciated and be helpful.
2. I started working from home during the shelter in place order, this isn't the companies fault by any means, but it has been an interesting way to start a job, just trying to get to know everyone and be a part of the team is a little tough at first.

Best Place Ever

I absolutely love this place. People on here who complain about it are wrong. From coming from a fortune 50 company, VIZ Media doesn't suck the life out of you and they are growing so much they are open to innovative ideas. Work hours are flexable, pay isn't too bad, benefits great, PTO is great, and they company culture is amazing. There is something for everyone if you like anime or not. It is a better experience if you are passionate about the product. There is room for a ton of growth as well.
