VoltDB truly has unique technology which was ahead of its time. Dr. Michael Stonebraker is a database visionary with several successful db startups to his credit. Although I am no longer at VoltDB, I still feel strongly about the vision and technology. The technology is positioned well to take advantage of the 5g market.

The market opportunity is somewhat limited to transactional use cases that require sub-millisecond decisions. Several open source no-sql solutions can satisfy the use case if sub-millisecond transactions are not required.

VoltDB is a late stage startup with a really well thought out product, real brand name customers and a track record of solving difficult problems. It’s small enough that you can really make a difference, but big and mature enough that you don’t have to worry about whether it will vanish overnight like startups have been known to do. Processes and internal paperwork are what’s needed to get the job done, no more, no less.
If you understand the technology, don’t mind working with considerable independence and want to make a difference this this might just be for you…

VoltDB operates in a complicated and highly specialized market place, and is in many respects ahead of the market, in that it’s solving problems people are only starting to encounter now. I’ve had cases where people simply refused to believe what we could do, because we were so far ahead of their expectations.
The HQ location isn’t great, especially when compared with the current fashion for urban office space.
Do not expect to be onboarded with a desk full of swag, a group hug and three choruses of the company song. VoltDB is friendly, but not ‘over the top’.

I truly look forward to going to work every day - it's an interesting field that attracts bright minds and the office has great energy. People work hard but don't take themselves too seriously. It's exciting to have a product with such powerful applications- machine learning, 5G / iOT, and it's rewarding be a part of it.

Like any start up, you can worry about adoption and future success, but I probably worry here less than other small companies. Hard to find a lot of cons of working here.

Great culture - lots of laughs and collaboration across teams.
Complete transparency with leadership team.

Interesting technology. People are very nice, if not all that friendly.

Massive layoff (25%) in summer of 2017 showed just how fragile this company is. It was either caused by bad planning (why hire a bunch of people only to lay them off in a few months time?) or customers backing out of deals. Either way, it's not a good sign for the long term.
No opportunities for advancement on the engineering side.
