Entrepreneurship is the best way I've found to actually solve real problems together with a tight team of inspiring people.
In October 2012 I met my three cofounders who were working on their PhDs in Machine Learning / Computer Vision. Since then we've hired people we really want to work with and who will be better than us at their roles. It makes this place so much fun and a great place to learn.
An important part of our Volumental culture is ownership and responsibility. Another important aim at Volumental, and my personal mission, is that everyone at Volumental learns tools and skills for personal development and for company building, so that you are weaponised to go out and start your own companies or be a crucial contributor in building other companies in future. For this, we believe it is important to share how and why the company works. Also we want all employees to co-own Volumental and be part of the long term success of the company through options and shareholding.
We also have two dogs at the office, soon three!

Working with driven people at a growing company

The company is growing a lot and I was one of many people hired in the last 6 months. I joined the company for two main reasons: to work for a growing company and do so with talented and driven people. Everyone at Volumental are great in their field of expertise and one can always learn something new by talking to others. The people at the company are all very driven and striving for the same goals.
My expectation of the workplace before starting were met and it is truly a great place to work at. It is a very flat organization, dependent on self discipline which gives a lot of freedom and flexibility in work.

In a growing company there are sometimes lack of processes since new tasks or areas evolve. This can be frustrating at times but it is also part of the charm working for a growing company and together figuring out what best processes are.

Super talented people from all over the world, Volumental really values diversity in terms of experience (from fashion designers to ML PhDs), nationalities (17 nationalities among 40 employees), educational background and more. The product we are building is live in 35 countries and there is a large focus on building something larger than us and than Sweden. Own initiative and speaking your mind is actively encouraged regardless of your role. CEO and founders are very approachable, friendly and helpful.

Compensation has improved significantly but benefits are still not the highest, however focus has been on growing the team in a fiscally responsible way. Sometimes the immaturity of processes in the company can be frustrating but a lot of growing pains are being addressed (and more are showing up!)

The best thing about the company is the people: they have been extremely good at attracting smart, driven, and collaborative people in all parts of the organization. Everyone there is interested in building something bigger than their own area, so it is a great environment to work across traditional role descriptions.

The culture involves a lot of transparency and directness. If you come from a more traditional, corporate environment, this can be something new that you need to adjust to.

- Some growing pains: certain processes are still a bit unorganised and are hard to replicate the same way next time you need them
- If you were previously working in a bigger company, it can take some until you feel adapted to a startup environment.
