Ode to a Startup

In the time I've been here, there are few dull moments. Everything is evolving at the company at all times, and the employees are evolving right along with it! There isn't a person here who's afraid to jump in and help tackle the ever-changing challenges of the day. Whether it's the CEO installing speakers in the ceiling for employees to have music, the COO dressing up as an elf for a holiday celebration, or the CTO tinkering with prototypes and teaching some incredible pieces of the process, everyone here helps out. That's just the leadership keeping morale up and keeping us learning and growing, even in areas that might not pertain to our main role! We have an incredible team of people. It is unbelievable every day to come to the office and encounter people who are so passionate about their craft. These are my coworkers?! This team of people can truly accomplish whatever they put their minds to, and they like to have fun along the way. As fun as the Vutiliti team is, they are also dedicated and tough. I don't know of anyone here who hasn't volunteered their own time away to accomplish our goals here. It's a startup, and there are sacrifices required to succeed, but this company has amassed such a stellar group of people, it seems truly unbelievable. Whoa, that's a lot of words to say, "The employees here are number one to work with and experts in their fields. This is what happens when humility meets practically divine talent: great people creating amazing products and experiences to make a difference in the world!" Well, most of us show some humility sometimes. ;) Some of us just have to admit how great we are. Muahahaha! No, really, the people at this company make it a spectacular place to work. Based on this review, at least one of them is a bit chatty and prone to hyperbole though.
Let's move on! Pros! Well, what other compliments can you give to a company that has the coolest collection of peeps to work with? How about the product?! It's a great product with no downsides, and it promotes a better world. This is a no-brainer to get behind. Vutiliti has found a way to be a positive force for change while also having a market for business. It's impressive, and anyone who learns about the tech will definitely appreciate it! It's nice to work to build a product that you believe in!
Since this is too verbose for words (huh? What?), let's fly through some other perks!
* Snaaaacks (Snacks are important! I don't care what you say!)
* Unlimited soda and coffee - Fuel the your passion with a caffeine addiction!
* Opportunities for Growth - my career has evolved dramatically here, and I love, love, LOVE it! They supported my transition into a new role and even funded training for it!
* Promises made, promises kept - I've been challenged to some crazy work/deadline competitions. To make it fun, they offered a prize if I hit the deadline. I hit the deadline, and they delivered the prize! And it was AWESOME! There is one grand prize I'm thinking of, but this has happened on multiple occasions for smaller prizes as well.
* No routine to settle into - It's not boring around here. There is a hint of routine around here, but it's mostly settled around, "And what mysterious challenge will reveal itself today?" If you aren't afraid of doing tasks that fall so very far from your preferred area of expertise, you will love it here. You can innovate solutions for your passion projects as well as solutions for puzzles you'd never even considered before.
* Everyone here is willing to teach and help out. I know. I already talked about how great everyone is. We get it, they're the best. Ugh.
* We run on Scrum here, and a core principle that we embody here is to constantly seek to improve. Even small changes can make a big difference.

It's a startup. Sometimes, truly, it feels a bit chaotic around here. Really though, I think I painted it accurately in the Pros section. If you can handle the challenge of an ever-changing environment, you'll not find a problem here. As I said, we are always seeking to improve, even in little ways!

The CEO is deceitful, manipulative, and abusive. More than once I heard him make over-the-top sexist remarks about women in the workplace, and he was constantly breaking promises. One time an employee was trying to warn him about a weakness in their software and the CEO kept refusing to let him fix it, then when it broke and cost the company money, he tried to pin it on the same employee that tried to fix it and they fired him with no severance or notice. The first time we were at risk of not completing all our sprint work, he suggested lining us up for a NERF firing squad or making us do 10 push ups for every missed story point. I wouldn’t work there if they paid me triple what I’m making now (which is, interestingly, triple what I made there).

Best Job I've ever had!

Can say honestly and with out a doubt, I've never felt more rewarded for hard work while at the same time pushed to go beyond my limits. All levels of management respect the development process. I feel like the work I do is part of something bigger and actually matters and will make a difference in the world. Coming up on one year and I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.
