Following my time at Wallaroo I completed another internship where I was able to head up projects, take on real responsibility, and was paid for my work. It was a stark contrast to Wallaroo because I felt that they were investing in my growth whereas I felt like Wallaroo was looking for some free labor (in exchange for a college credit I guess). What really hammered this home was that after I graduated from college and had completed several other marketing-related internships I applied for two jobs at Wallaroo. I didn't get either job (which is fine) but it seemed very unprofessional that I wasn't contacted at all about either job. Some better than other. Wallaroo Media has been the best job I've ever had by far. Here are the reasons: 1. Autonomy: Wallaroo will train you continuously, but they also give you a lot of autonomy. I like this because it allows me to do what I want with my clients, expand my role responsibilities, and grow/progress in my career. 2. Growth Opportunities: Wallaroo will let you grow and progress as quickly as you want to. My career has progressed more in almost 2 years at Wallaroo than I could have ever imagined and I know there's even more ahead. 3. Trust: ties in with autonomy, but there's a high level of trust here. 4. Leadership: the leadership (CEO, President, and VP) is amazing. They invest a lot of time, care, and energy into each employee and foster a very healthy and happy work environment. 5. Work-Life Balance: this is probably one of my favorite perks. Having a 4-day in-office work week along with many other remote work days provides a balance that is unmatched by any previous employer I've had. 6. Personal/Professional Development: the CEO and President are very invested in the personal and professional development of each employee. They support goals outside of work on a personal and financial level (there's a personal development bonus) and work to help each of professionally to learn, grow, and progress. 7. Quality of Work: I've worked at other agencies that I like to call a "revolving door agency" where the business is dependent on signing new clients almost constantly because they're losing them at an even faster rate. Wallaroo is successful, because they strive to sign and retain quality clients by providing them with honest, good work. 8. Honesty/Integrity: Wallaroo cares more about being honest with its clients and employees than it does about making a profit. Funny enough, I believe this is what has made them such a successful business that someone can be proud to represent and work for. 9. Awesome Clients: There are soooo many awesome clients and a wide variety of them so you can get experience with multiple DTC brands, B2B brands, etc. 10. Fun: Wallaroo is way fun and we do many activities, lunches, dinners, etc. as a company that really builds the culture and comradery of the team. Come work here and find out for yourself! It allows you to find your own stride and figure out where you want to fit. Because of the lack of structure, there is often very little pushback on ideas, as long as they're not expensive. In account management, I was asked by the CEO to mislead, lie, or say things that made me uncomfortable. I was also asked to describe reports as successful when sometimes they were not. Not everything an agency does works, which is part of the job, but rather than deal with those problems and learn from them, they were swept under the rug and repositioned to mislead clients. I had a really, really hard time with that. In my time there, I saw almost a complete turnover in senior leadership. I also heard the ownership gossip and back-bite about former employees, who were previously the most valuable employees on the team. I realized quickly that my reputation at the company was not safe, which is why I left. There is a culture of only doing work to make the owners money, or fund their vacations (which are numerous and exotic), while I struggled to pay my bills and was given small lump sum bonuses instead of real pay increases. When I expressed my trepidation, I was met with accusations of disloyalty and have since heard that my role at the company wasn't valuable. Loyalty only seemed to matter if it meant me making money for the owners, and not about me thriving in my own career. Since I left, I have met employees that used to work there, and they have all shared my feelings. They are all kind and willing to answer questions. That is the only thing that kept this from being a 1 star rating. The other pro, is that I was able to put something/anything about digital marketing on my resume. Where to begin... I really struggled writing this review due to the people who work there. However, I feel like interns should have their eyes open to what they are jumping into. Allow me to begin with the company as a whole. It feels very small town and family run--not very professional. Communication is lacking and so is the sense of professionalism that should come with this industry. On their website they say, "interns will take part in learning all aspects of digital marketing" and they also use keywords like strategy, develop, research and active when describing what your experience will be like. It's all lies. There was no strategizing, no developing, quite a bit of research (when writing blog articles) and no active participation. Worst of all, they guarantee that you will build a portfolio--which didn't happen That is what frustrated me most. I am a busy full-time college student and also working a full-time job. I went into this UNPAID internship looking to expand my portfolio, knowledge and skills so that I could further my career in the future. That didn't happen. Instead, what happened was that I was assigned (no research involved) blog topics, lengths and keywords (once again no research involved on my end) to write for different clients. Upon completion, I would submit the article and it would disappear into the void. Never did I receive any feedback on how the article was performing or how I could improve my writing and rarely would I see the completed piece. When I wasn't writing blog articles, I was usually writing copy for landing pages or blog landing pages--once again with no feedback. That was one of my largest complaints, there was little to no training and even less feedback. There was one formal training that we had and it was basically a waste of time. It wasn't as if I didn't try to be proactive. There were several weeks where there wasn't much work to be done, so I would ASK if I could learn about social media or Google Ads that were being done. You know where that landed me? Writing a internal training document for Google Ads--around 80 pages. Now if that doesn't spell out a waste of time, then I don't know what does. Long story short, they don't invest in their interns. While I was at Wallaroo, there were 2 other interns and they also expressed many of the same frustrations. There is also an awkwardness about being an intern there. It is like you aren't really accepted, I was never even showed where the bathroom was or that there was a stocked breakroom. Perhaps if this was paid, it wouldn't be so bad. But because they promised all these grand experiences and then didn't deliver on any deliverable, it made it worse. If you are trying to learn anything about digital marketing or grow your portfolio, don't waste your time with Wallaroo. After interning at 2 other companies, I would recommend anywhere but Wallaroo. The work/life balance is something I highly value and it's refreshing to find a company that feels similarly. There are 4-day work weeks with the option of working a half-day remotely for your 5th day. If you plan your hours accordingly, this can leave you with an extended weekend nearly every week. The company culture here is also fantastic. Employees are respectful and friendly with one another, and there have been new efforts to cultivate a strong morale and camaraderie. There are company movie nights throughout the year with the whole office (interns included), in which everyone can bring a significant other. Foosball and shuffleboard are staples in the office and there have been some exciting tournaments in the past. Full-time employees can enjoy a 1-month paid sabbatical after working full-time for 4 years, and then again every 3 years after that. Employees are encouraged to spend at least one week of this sabbatical on vacation, preferably out of the country. Every time I mention this perk to family and friends, the response is almost unanimous: "Are you hiring?," which indicates that not many companies offer this. If you plan accordingly, Brandon & Kade may even help cover some of your travel costs for your sabbatical. A lot of progress has been made in the last year in attaining quality clients that we enjoy working for, and while there is room for improvement, it's refreshing to see the changes that have been made. Brandon & Kade want Wallaroo to be a fun place to work, as do the members of its management team. You feel like they really care and that you're not just some cog in a corporate machine. No company is perfect, but they are continually looking for ways to improve and grow. There is always room for improvement, and while some previous reviews from former employees have had some merit, many of those issues have been addressed in the months since. Wallaroo is still a relatively young company, and as such, there are bound to be mistakes and problems. But Brandon & Kade are actively working on changing what isn't working with a focus on elevating this company and its employees. Sure, there are better paying jobs out there, but sometimes you pay for those jobs in other ways. Everyone gets along in the office and there is a strong sense of comradery. This helps create awesome environments for brainstorms, team projects, and the office atmosphere. The other awesome perk of this job is the four day work weeks. You work four 9 hour days in a row, and then you can do your last four hours from home. This means that every weekend is a three day weekend, which is nice. Brandon and Kade get to know their employees. They value individuals not only as employees but also as people. They understand that family comes first and encourage a healthy work/ life balance. However, the biggest perk at Wallaroo is the learning opportunity. Brandon and Kade don't want you to get "stuck" doing what you've always done. They encourage employees to spend time each week developing new skills. They let employees expand their job roles as they learn more. There is always an opportunity to learn and grow, which has been a wonderful experience. Looking back on the skills I had when I applied for the job versus the skills I have today is encouraging. I have grown so much as an individual because there is an attitude of learning and growing in the office. A lot of the cons mentioned in previous reviews have a bit of truth to them, but Brandon and Kade are actively working to change things. The biggest issue Wallaroo faces is that their salary packages are on the lower end for Utah. However, this is something that they have recently re-evaluated and are making changes to. No office is perfect, and Wallaroo is just like any other place. I had zero experience when I started at the company, and by the time I left, I felt like I could take on a variety of tasks in the digital marketing world from content creation to social media. I gained valuable experience and had several pieces of content that I could showcase in my portfolio. I had the ability to learn about different areas of digital marketing and ask questions. I was given time to research on my own and, during my internship, was given formal training. The workload varied, which was always fun. I got to work on a number of different tasks and develop new skills. Although there were good things, there were a lot of negative things about the company that made my overall work experience at the company pretty difficult. -Lack of professionalism: Ownership especially lacks professionalism. The CEOs wear joggers and athletic wear to the office, which doesn't look professional. One CEO in particular is sarcastic, and comments and actions can often come across as rude or extreme even in a joking context. -Office is very cliquish. I worked with Wallaroo for about 2 years, and I never felt like I truly belonged there. That could be due to my personality; however, the office is clearly separated. There are core groups that get along great and have been friends for years. It's intimidating to try and insert yourself into that group. Occasionally, it seemed like the CEOs favored those individuals. For example, one of the CEOs would always play shuffleboard with the same group of people. While it's fun to have some competition and rivalry going, it also excludes a number of other individuals in the office. The CEOs also tend to gravitate towards employees with large social media followings (whether that is on purpose or related, I don't know, but it doesn't look great). I felt excluded on multiple occasions and never felt like I could be myself. -There are no performance reviews (although the employee handbook says there are), which makes it extremely difficult to know how you are doing at the company. However, management does typically check in on interns during their semester at Wallaroo. -There is no official HR department. The CEOs instituted a monthly lunch with all paid employees to talk about issues employees are having, but this system wasn't consistent. Some employees were skipped over each month, even when an employee brought it to management's attention. But without an HR department, there was no mediator between employees and management. -Relies a lot on interns but doesn't treat them like part of the team. I started as an intern and often felt excluded and ignored by paid employees. While part of that is my own personality, full-time employees often look down on interns or are just tired of having the turnover every semester. It does get tedious to go through new interns each year and invest so much time in training them, especially when an intern doesn't product quality work. While I know some people make the effort and changes have been made, there is still a long way to go to make interns truly feel welcomed. I think that this aspect of internships is part of the reason Wallaroo can't seem to get quality interns to stick around after their internship. -Pay isn't great. Wallaroo is located in a college town. And with the full-time pay they offer, they will continue to get college students to work there. -Can be unorganized and inconsistent at times. Communication between employees and the CEOs isn't always ideal. It was difficult to know when the CEOs or VP would actually be in the office or what they were working on. Sometimes the CEOs would have additional information or communication from a client that didn't always get communicated to the teams. This lack of transparency and communication was frustrating. -I ran out of stuff to work on. For months, I didn't have enough work to do. As a team lead, I assigned much of my work to interns who were doing the internship for school credit and needed to work a certain number of hours. However, this left me with little to do. Typically, I finished my monthly tasks 2 weeks into the month. I know the CEOs are doing the best they can, especially since Wallaroo is the first business they have ever managed. And I did see lots of changes while I was there. We allow everyone to dress as they please at the office.\r\n - We try to include everyone as much as possible with shuffleboard, foosball, company movie nights (in theater, and we just got a fun projector for the office, woo hoo!), team lunches, company lunches, individual lunches, etc. We know we can improve further here though, and are working on it.\r\n - Performance reviews have been spotty of late, but regular performance reviews and action plans are on the horizon!\r\n - We changed our intern approach a while ago. We now only take on 2-4 interns at a time, with the hopes of hiring at least half to full-time positions (all current employees started as interns with the exception of 3).\r\n - Pay has been increasing steadily due to the fact that we do two raises every year for every employee (January and July), and pay will continue to increase!\r\n - We are definitely working on improvements when it comes to organization.
