I enjoyed working with my colleagues and met some incredible faculty, staff, and students. The leadership is extremely difficult to navigate, however, and if you are not from Walsh, it’s difficult to advance. The pay is offensively low and the workload and hours are above and beyond typical. Walsh is also extremely conservative and takes much pride in this arena. They responded slowly to covid (mask wearing, limiting mass gatherings/events), and are doing very very little to promote diversity in all arenas. If you are any sort of minority, be ready to feel isolated; there are very few and it is not a topic that is discussed freely. Keep in mind that, like most institutions, it depends on your team, but everyone on campus knows the pay is extremely low, the workload is extremely high, and the conservatism on campus continues to grow. private:walshuniversity https://www.indeed.com/cmp/walsh-university/reviews Nov 11th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Walsh University Job offer was taken back Canton, OH USA Unethical Hiring Practices I really wanted to avoid writing this but a realistic preview of what someone might expect when applying for a role here. A role opened at Walsh U and prior to applying I communicated with hiring and one over manager about my interest in the role and my current employment status as it related to a lay off. I was open and transparent about my timelines in every single communication I had with them. They did well to assure me that for the right candidate, a release date can be negotiated and encouraged me to apply. After submitting the application interviews began being scheduled throughout which I continued to be transparent with the hiring team on when I could potentially start but was still waiting for confirmation of separation. They continued to give me piece of mind in that they would be happy to again discuss start dates with the right person. I bent over backward for this company to complete the interview process. There were on 2 occasions that took time off of work from my current job because they had to move interview times around. I was even willing to work take another day off from work to attend a workshop they wanted me to complete prior to starting. After 3 rounds of interviews with a total of approximately 10 individuals within panels and one on one interviews I received an offer for the lowest entry rate they offered for the role. It was worth it to lose 15,000 a year to get my foot in the door. At that time I want to say two days after the very informal job offer (no formal offer letter, nothing) and submitting my background check information I was asked to start November 2nd. I had a conditional 2 week notice request pending with my organization I was waiting for approval on so I advised I would let the hiring team know straight away. I heard back 2 days later from my organization that the earliest they could release me was Nov 16. After following up with Walsh on a confirmed date I was told they would have to "get back to me and discuss with higher leadership" which I respected. After hearing nothing for multiple days I did another follow up with an explanation of why it had taken a bit longer. The following day I received an email from the hiring manager advising that "I am unable to make solid commitments so they needed to move forward with someone who could start immediately." After multiple confirmations from a leadership team saying they would work with the right candidate they shifted positions after their first start date request and decided that either I wasn't the right candidate or I simply wasn't the "right now" candidate. This tells me and any applicant two things: 1.) They don't care about the quality of who they hire and don't seem to understand impact of these poor practices. 2.) Based on these actions, it tells me and other applicants that the role would have had little to no training or support. They were more worried about how much work they had to get done than getting the right person in the role. The entire process took weeks to get through, more than 2. So this also tells me, they didn't execute courage to tell the other candidate they didn't get the job and turned around and offered it to the runner up. Otherwise, why would they not wait 2 weeks for me to start? To go back to the drawing board would have taken more than 2 weeks. This review should reflect the reputation of this school and its hiring practices. Please be thoughtful before applying for a role with this company. I have to be clear, everyone I talked to and interviewed with were so genuinely kind and excited for me to start just to throw it all away over a 2 week start date conflict. Support from faculty was tremendous. Focus on students was also outstanding and instructors were encouraged to be very engaged with their students. This was not hard to do since the average class size was about 10-15 students. Since I was not tenured faculty, but a part time adjunct, I was given a lot of latitude to teach the class still following the course syllabus, textbook, and learning outcomes as set by the department chair. Current employees seemed to have gone to school there as undergraduates and worked their way through the system and stayed. I really enjoyed the job I picked for work study. The advisors I worked for were very nice and also had work for me to do even if it wasn't a lot.
