Wonderful place to work but few opportunities
|
It was a mixed experiences working here. It was both fast-paced but sometimes slow. I loved the environment and work but personally didn't like trying to handsell products and push purchases onto customers. The management was superb. Casual, fun, energetic and inspiring. There's a strong sense of teamwork and enjoyment.

Not much flexibility. Short notice for shifts. Pay not as high as I'd like.

I thought this would be my dream job. However I found it stressful and having targets for sales upset me as I, maybe naively, believe reading should be fun and personal, whereas we were expected to push specific books onto customers.

Wonderful work culture
|
The people are lovely, and the customers are lovely. Great benefit of having 50% off books. However, cancelled out by minimum wage income. Would recommend as you can learn a lot and have a lot of great conversation. Very peaceful work.

Inspires passion for reading, management disappointing

The customers were demanding, expecting you to have an awful lot of knowledge, but I enjoyed the challenge and it was wonderful to talk with people all day. It definitely encourages you to read even more and try books you wouldn't ordinarily pick up- probably the highlight. The shops are lovely environments to work in esp the newer branches. Despite being demanding, the customers generally really appreciate and enjoy the shop.
Downsides are the pay is low, minimum wage to start. The management at my branch was poor also. They spoke to lower ranking staff rudely, consistently undermined them in front of customers and blamed them for their own mistakes. Many of us were shocked by the toxic environment the manager created. Made the experience much more stressful than it needed to be. Staff were moved around from branch to branch without much say at times too.

A Well-Balanced and Cooperative Workplace

I worked at Waterstones over the Christmas period, so it was a bit busier than usual. Everyone who worked in the store was really friendly and welcoming, and I immediately felt at home. Everyone was willing to help me with tasks that were unfamiliar to me which was great, and I never felt like an inconvenience.
The atmosphere in the shop was really good, and everyone pitched in to help one another, including the managers. The hardest part of the job was just getting familiar with the shop's layout and stock – people would come in with some fairly vague questions and it could be difficult for me to answer them when I didn't have as wide a knowledge of the store as my colleagues did. It was easy to become familiar with the big sellers, though.
Due to the nature of the shop, the vast majority of customers were very friendly and willing to chat which made the days go quickly and enjoyably.

Absolutely loved working here, great and friendly staff. Brilliant management. Everyone is super relaxed but also hard working. The wage is also good, I was part-time and it was perfect for me.

Conditions were awful- staff were frequently endangered by poor management (dangerous working conditions) and expected to take the hit for mismanagement or miscommunication between higher ups. Pay is abysmal and company policy designed to exploit staff on the ground for little to no compensation. Staff were incredibly hardworking and work culture was excellent nd really supportive outside of management

Great atmosphere

The company itself seems to have a good attitude, both towards the role and towards its employees.
I can only speak for my store, maybe I got lucky, but staff are supportive and it really is a team. Yes there are sales targets etc but there is also a genuine customer focus and you're never asked to sell...well, rubbish. Each staff member's own interests and recommendations are respected.
