You’re on these programs working a lot with little to no free time but the support you receive makes it all worth it. Meeting amazing teenagers along the way makes for a great summer. You’ll get a great mix of teenagers that can range in personality but the relationships you can build with them can be long and meaningful if you put in the effort to get to know them. You get to see many different beautiful places that make this job all worth it. They truly value and care about their staff and do everything possible to make you feel apart of the family. Every year an intensive training weekend is provided to not only prepare you for you summer adventure but also to bond and meet many different people. I look forward to these weekends every year and they are truly a highlight of my year, filled with lots of learning and fun. Being a trip director or trip leader you get to experience your summer trip with your fellow staff and all of the trip members. Travelling to different places and creating bonds with all of the participants, providing them the best summer, I make sure to be able to come back to WCC year after year! No better way to spend my summer making connections that last way beyond the summer months. AVOID. Traveling. This is cool, but don't be fooled- there are better ways to travel and be paid than by working with Westcoast. Many of the Trip Directors are genuinely the nicest people. They're teachers and coaches, for the most part, and really care. Bad pay. Which makes it so only those who come from rich families and can afford to not make money in the summer can be on staff. Result? Very privileged staff, in general. Which brings us to the next point: this is not a diverse community. Opinions and experiences that are different from those of the 'Westcoast Mainstream' (read: rich, white) are not really wanted. Feedback on how to improve the company or operations (beyond 'let's do a training on diversity') is also not welcome. Everything will be your fault. Everything. A kid had a bad day because it rained and their jacket got wet? It's your fault. Expect to hear about it. Someone's food didn't taste quite right? Also your fault. Someone gets hurt and you take them to the hospital and sort out insurance details, and make sure they're taken care of? It's your fault and you're a bad staff member. The hardest part is having to standby and not intervene when students are getting out of hand. If they're rude to waiters at restaurants, you need to keep your mouth shut. If they're bullying each other on social media, you can't say anything. I had several kids come to me in tears because they were bullied, some wanted to leave the trip early, but I couldn't address the bully, because I didn't see it happen, and a victim's statement is not 'proof'. The company is most concerned with the interests of very rich parents. Listen to staff when they say something is wrong. Trust the people you hire; they're on the ground with the students and doing their best. Be ready to say no to parents. The 'code of conduct' is good only in so much as it's respected and upheld. The company talks a big game about supporting its staff, but will only do so if it does not hurt their bottom line. The incredibly wealthy clientele and their networks comes first, second, third and fourth. Blame will always be placed on summer staff, because summer staff are disposable, even as your job is extremely time consuming, detailed, and difficult. You will be expected to cater to the trip members and their parents' every whim.
