Prestige. Nice working environment. Kind peers. Some "problematic partners" you do not want to work for -- but this is true at every firm. Paras and associate attorneys work their butts off so being a compassionate assistant helps smooth the working relationships. Many of the legal secretaries are very senior and can be grouchy -- despite making $100k, having great benefits: a Cadillac health care plan, 401k, 4-5 weeks paid time off (PTO) to use for whatever you want.

Most of the young partners and associates do all their own word processing so you are left out of the loop on what they are working on. You put in their time, order lunches, make reservations, submit expense reports, send things to duplicating or the word processing dept instead of doing it yourself, and answer phones. If you look at the "desk coverage memos" for most of the attorneys...there's really not much there to call it a "career." For this reason you may have one legal secretary working for as many as 8 attorneys, usually 2 partners and 6 associates. Bottom line: you get bored. And yet you're in a big bowl of butter in terms of working conditions, pay, and benefits.

In almost a decade working at Wachtell, the management was very supportive of me. They want to keep the staff happy. I think as the old guard die and retire (Herb Wachtell, Marty Lipton are in their 80s) the younger partners who came of age in the "Michael Milken 80s" have a more aggressive, less genteel, and a bit more ruthless management style. Adam Emmerich and Jeannemarie O'Brien come to mind. (Editors note: Marty Lipton was the mastermind of the The Poison Pill to detour hostile takeovers. As far as I know, he was not party to the junk bond shenanigans of the 1980s.) NOTEs on the STAR RATING: Career - 1 star because without a JD there's no place to go at WLRK. Once a secretary, always a secretary. Opportunities to move up into administration happen, but are very rare. Work/Life Balance - I give it 5 stars because as a legal secretary you are strongly discouraged to get overtime (your partner has to sign off on those extra hours). You also have 4-5 weeks of PTO so getting time away is really not hard for support staff.
