It's located in a trendy part of town with many nearby lunch options and right on the beltline, which is perfect for getting out for a walk. For the most part, all co-workers get along well. It almost feels like a little family! Write2Market is a great place to grow in your career. While I started with zero agency experience, I now manage multiple accounts and my confidence has grown tremendously, largely due to the responsibility/trust I've been given. The variety of clientele keeps things interesting and there’s something new to do every day. Working here is never boring! It is probably best for people who prefer a challenging and fast-paced career. Work-life balance is important to our boss and he goes out of his way to make sure we're all comfortable, allowing flexibility in our schedules. He also supports opportunities for continued learning outside of the office. I will admit that when I began working here, there were a few challenges, as the agency was in the process of being reorganized. When I began my job at my current employer, though, the Write2Market account executive began to demand that I produce materials. With loose oversight over time, Write2Market began to schedule extremely tight deadlines for me to meet in creating original materials (including during my vacation). There is now a question as to whether they claimed—and charged for--some of my work, which of course affects my job reviews, salary and bonus. From everything I’ve read, seen and experienced, I’d say Write2Market has problems delivering results and will use whatever resources they can muster to do their work (including people who don’t work for them). Some of their employees are competent, friendly people who want to do a good job. Since the agency is boutique, it was easy to become close with my fellow co-workers and I always felt free to ask them questions and receive their help. Halfway through my time at W2M, I became very ill. Management was very flexible with me working from home and encouraged me to rest and get well. Flexible work hours meant you didn't have to arrive exactly at 9:00 AM. Working remotely was generally no problem. One would be hard-pressed to find a more poorly run PR agency, if you can call it that. It's a great place to work if you don't mind being blamed for management's abundant misgivings. What is Write2Market? The company sells itself as an everything agency to land business, which puts a great deal of stress on the too-few employees that are left to do the work. For an agency with fewer than 10 people on staff, it's tough to properly service clients as a full-service marketing, PR, advertising, direct marketing and social agency. Manipulative, misguided, clueless, abusive leadership - The owner plays the employees like pawns, just to let everyone know she's in charge. - The partner, who has no real experience in the field, has no idea about how to run an effective communications campaign. - There have been reliable reports of employees and former employees being forced to publish positive reviews here on Glassdoor. - Owners would habitually schedule 9:00 AM meetings on the morning of the meeting. Similarly, they would call mandatory after-hours meetings on the afternoon of the meeting. - Over-promising on the part of the people who sell for the company was an ongoing issue. There simply was no way for the bare-bones team to deliver everything that was promised. - The owners promise things to clients that simply cannot be accomplished by the people who work at the company. Not because employees don't want to do it, but because they don't possess the skills needed to do the job properly. No one person is an expert at PR, marketing, direct mail, design and HTML coding, yet that wide array of assignments was not uncommon for one person. The response to "I don't know how to do that" would either be "you'll never learn it if you don't do it" or a blank, silent, passive-aggressive stare. On-the-job training for something as important as a website is fine, but not while charging clients thousands of dollars per month in retainer fees and passing off your team as experts in that particular skill. Paranoia Rather than doing any actual work, the leadership would log in to employees' email accounts during the work day to monitor incoming and outgoing messages. This was a daily occurrence. Employees would systematically be bumped out of their email accounts one by one during the work day, which meant someone else had logged in, and you would lose all the work you were in the process of doing. Number of emails sent was a measure of effectiveness for employees, and the number was often brought up. Passive-aggression The owner often would send passive-aggressive emails to team members. These "nastygrams" admonished hard-working team members for not doing more, or flat-out blamed employees for clients' satisfaction, or lack thereof. This would happen electronically, while the owner would smile to your face. Understaffing It would be an understatement to say that this company is horribly understaffed. Because of this, stressful 60-hour work weeks were a common occurrence. Turnover rates The rate at which clients turned over was extraordinary. Same holds true for employee turnover. Good non-management team. Some good clients who understand what PR is. Good benefits and vacation / sick time. Nice to you when you begin. Great place to begin an internship and learn the ins and outs of basic PR world. Heard through the grape vine that the CEO had to ask / bribe current and former employees to write positive reviews here on Glassdoor. The leadership and ownership is not morally or ethically sound. Condescending nature of upper management really discouraged the culture they were trying to grow. There were multiple instances of bad business decisions that affected the team as a whole. Expectations were never fully communicated to the team, and client / employee turn over is higher than I've ever seen at any agency. The CEO and her partner way over promised deliverables to clients, yet never properly staffed the agency or provided the resources to fulfill those promises. As a result, clients dropped like flies and the owners always blamed the employees and never took any responsibility for their actions. Internal communication suffered tremendously. Expectations in any aspect of the business were never communicated. It's a great position to learn about PR. Clients are interesting and interacting with them is the best part about the job. Most clients are local, so having client meetings at the clients' office breaks up time in the office. There is too much work and not enough people to do it all efficiently. The company was severely understaffed the whole time I worked there, but the owners refused to hire anyone. This makes balancing work and life activities very difficult. Communication is a huge issue with this company. Kind of ironic since it IS a "communications agency". When new clients are on-boarded there is no communication as to next steps. Sometimes you're just thrown into the launch meeting with the new client. When a client leaves, there is no communication and employees find out through the grapevine - even if they are on that account. The same happens when an employee leaves. Transparency is non-existent and management does not immediately communicate with the client, but waits until the last minute. Naturally the client feels left in the dark and is not happy. It's a huge red flag when turnover is extremely high for BOTH employees and clients. Employees are unhappy and the ones that can't handle the stress and negativity leave quickly, whether they have a new job or not. Clients leave for various reasons. Management communicates the stress of client turnover by putting more and more pressure on employees to deliver expectations (that were never communicated to employees in the first place). There is a lot of unnecessary negativity, belittling and passive agressive comments that come from the partners, you never know what mood you will get. The CEO and Managers are very open and allow you to dabble into various aspects of public relations that interest you. I enjoyed that I was able to grow in several different fields. Co-workers are helpful, have tons of experience and don't mind lending a hand. There are also many opportunities to build your leadership skills through weekly executive meetings, company dinners, workshops, and team building activities. Since Write2Market is a boutique agency, at times the work is not spread out as evenly between co-workers.
