With regard to the portal practice, it all depends on what project you are assigned to

I met some fantastic people working there and was lucky enough to work on a really fun project for the first part of my tenure. The benefits were decent (at first). The CEO is a really nice guy who seems like he actually cares about his employees.

Since XTIVIA is a consultant, it really depends on what project you are assigned to. The ideal situation is to be on a large project that is not managed in-house but by the client. Projects managed internally tend to be highly stressful, and full of knee-jerk decision making. Not only that, but once the pressure gets high, leadership tends to lose its cool, and take completely unprofessional actions like yelling at employees and slamming doors.
Every project is developed within the context of Liferay portal - an archaic, bloated mess of a platform that makes using any modern front-end framework much more difficult than it should be.
Also, it seems to be a standard of the portal practice to only hire male developers. There was literally one woman on the team, and she was the admin. The one time we hired a female developer, she was berated into quitting within a week, and it had nothing to with her performance.
