Lots of potential, poorly managed
|
Poorly managed. Management consists of people in the role based in internal politics. They rarely have qualifications or experience in the departments they are managing. This causes error after error in the most basic aspects of the business. Unfortunately, this is covered up by the managers by providing fake reports and fake data, something they've been caught for by the NYSE twice in the past two years.
Stay away at all costs. The salary was high, but it was not worth it.

I had an unusual position within the company as, besides teaching on line group classes, I was hired to proofread, help develop curriculum, and work with several department leaders within the educational portion of this large company. Those hired to teach on line were also called upon to help in a variety of ways, but had a lot more "down time" than I usually did. If you decide to work with a company in Beijing, be prepared for difficulties in acquiring a work visa (but do NOT go without one), and be very, very flexible. TAL is a terrific company to work for. If I didn't have family ties that pulled at my heart, I'd have stayed on indefinitely. I loved the job and my fellow employees!

I worked in one of the branch in TAL Education Group, First leap, it focused on K12 English education in immersion way. During that time I taught five classes in a week, and each class has average 10 students aged from 5 to 13.

Great when it’s good
|
Because it is contract work based on the classes/slots you teach, the pay can be unpredictable. You may have all of your classes full, or you may have many empty slots. If you live in the Western Hemisphere as I do, be prepared to get up VERY early. Overall I love it. Great part-time work where you are making a difference in the lives of children.

Fun job but at odd hours
|
If you like teaching kids this is a fun job to do that. You get to develop relationships with the students 1 on 1 and it is nice to see your students progress. The hours can be challenging if you are in US time zones. Expect to work very early hours.
It is part time work and you will need to file your taxes as an independent contractor. Otherwise teaching the kids is rewarding and pretty fun.
Some teachers have some tech issues with the program that VIPX uses. In my experience, it has been smooth but I noticed that some mac users can have some issues. The company works on trying to fix the updates so it is getting much better.

I teach kids in China how to speak English. The company is based in Beijing, the environment is nice, but I work Tue-Sat, 5:10-10:10. In Standard Time, we jump back one hour (4:10-9:10). I have many regular students, some have as many as 30 classes with me over the months, and we get paid monthly. It is a nice, fun, part-time job.

No management, no direction, kind of a scam
|
This company does not advertise that you will not be given students, but rather that you must seek them out yourself through self-advertising. Because of this, the initial salary of $17.00 per hour actually becomes a bait-and-switch operation, where you become an on-call substitute teacher for $5.00 per hour. Unless you are okay with staying up for long hours for minimal pay, I would not recommend this job for you.

Get paid below minimum wage and don't make enough to survive, while also living your life on Beijing time.
