I have worked in the Learning Center for 20 years, and there is a culture of diversity and inclusion. There is a bond between staff and tutors and front desk workers that is very loving. The work itself involves tutoring students from age 16-80, honor students, athletes, disabled students, ESL students and traditional students just starting out in college. I love working for the Computer Commons. It allows me to get my homework done in a timely manner, flexible hours. I go to work, go to class, go back to work. Fantastic. It's chill. MANY positive offerings for students and the public. HOWEVER, with regard to employment there, upper level management is/was completely out of touch with their own workforce. My experience as a supervisor in Student Development left me feeling like I may as well have been working in a factory with no regard for staff work load or conditions, with enrollment numbers dictating the stress level. Staff were made to feel that increased enrollment was their personal responsibility. Failure was imminent (Economy dictates enrollment, not the efforts of staff!). And reprimand was sure to follow. It was a terrible, stress-filled experience for me with expectations that were beyond reason, particularly for the pay. I am sad that that was my experience after leaving a good job on the other side of the country to come to what was puffed up to look like a great job but in the end nearly cost me my mental health. It wasn't all bad. Just upper level management. There are very wonderful, good people working for that god forsaken place. I understand that there have been changes to upper level management and that has had a positive effect on staff. Students and Adults learn and practice ASL in class. At work I can teach workers ASL if they wanted to learn.
