The NY office is beautiful and in a fantastic location. Work hours are pretty fluid and not super cutthroat (outside of Q4).
Some of the people are absolutely lovely.
|
Startup culture is similar to building a rocket ship while flying it at once; you have to understand that things are subject to change. But that shouldn’t apply to everything.
There was a lack of transparency and true direction. Promises were made but never fulfilled. And unless you work in sales, the opportunity to grow was seemingly limited.
The turnover rate was also incredibly disheartening. Some exceptional talents exited in quick succession while management struggled to incentivize and inspire those who remained.
Between “private” conversations not kept private and palpable politics, it’s not the most conducive environment for productivity.
Unlimited vacation came with a price tag which included a fair amount of pushback with a dash of judgement.
Q4 was chaotic. With shrinking personnel, expectations were unreasonable creating further friction.

I don't regret working here because I learned a ton on startup, fast paced, revenue driven work environment - learned to hustle and be super competitive. Looking back, I'm glad I left at the state of the company.

Coming to work was super unpredictable. You can work really hard and help with revenue or in other areas of the business, but if you do not engage in work politics or are not hanging out with key people in the company, you will fail. Perhaps due to the casual environment, noticed that inappropriate/irrelevant comments (sexual, political, etc) will be mentioned in our all hands meeting, and it would be brushed aside because leadership mentioned it, so it makes it okay (when it's not). There's also this weird, catty behavior on Client Services team of gossiping about each other (did not engage with this). Also there's this expectation that people were supposed to be whizzes at the databases and products in such a short amount of time (chastised if wanted to improve or learn more about this). Let go a lot of really good people who added value to the company. Some were people who had good reviews and were never put on performance plan, yet were let go (makes no sense).

Shopper seemed to perform better than agency due to the clients being clueless about anything digital, so any reporting looked good to them. There are a couple of young people who were mediocre managers, they should have had better managerial training from senior management. Focus on team development (improving their weaknesses, utilizing their strengths) and it will likely raise morale and performance for the company.
