Full Autonomy in the Foreign Languages Education Department
|

I cannot comment on employment in the other departments at YTU, but the Foreign Languages Education Deparment in the Faculty of Education really does create a fully autonomous work environment, in which each instrutor is free to develop coursework and adapt curriculum materials according to their interests and desires. The caliber of students accepted into this department is very high and competitive; the class profile isn't filled with a bunch of students just attending their courses and 'phoning it in.' There is a genuine interest to learn and engage with the department's program. What coursework there is to teach, based on the Turkish Ministry of Education's curriculum requirements and guidelines, is also fairly flexible and interesting to adapt and explore. Very little obligations are placed on faculty instructors during the summer break--which is generally almost 4 months long. Pay is a little low when comparing the same job title and position at private universities throughout Istanbul, however, weekly teaching hours and obligations outside of teaching hours are also lower than the average here in Turkey.

Not enough IT support is provided to maintain and update the technology currently available on campus (which mostly consists of older models of projectors, sound systems, computer labs, etc.) and there appears to be no budget available, or really any effort made, for technological innovations in the classroom and the department facilities on campus. The name of the university includes 'technical,' and that's where the irony starts and ends. It is a shame really. Considering that I work for a school that focuses on education and specializes in the education of foreign languages, it would be beneficial for my students (as teacher candidates) to experience and experiment with some of the new technologies (and technological devices) available to educators today.

You can complete your master's or doctoral degree while working.

The presidency of the university doesn't even try to manage honestly. They are protecting and supporting if you're from them. Otherwise, you'll get only mobbing independent from how hard you're working. Quality is at a low level and after you finish your degrees they're gonna discharge you.
