Little Fish That Thinks it's a Big Fish
|
|
- most employees are friendly and easy to get along with / connect with
- volunteering opportunities
- convenient location
|
Decision Making: While they have hired a great bunch of people within the teams, the 5 people making virtually EVERY decision about your role, work life and the overall business are at odds with each other in every way possible. As someone whose role it was to engage with all employees across teams, a common sentiment is shared through the ranks that being micromanaged is neither enjoyable, empowering nor inspiring and it is a huge part of the DNA of this organization. Decisions are made in a box here, and you are expected to "fall in line" with what leadership dictates, or risk being ostrasized by your own management team (both socially and professionally). Key takeaway - a great company proudly operates as a democracy of good ideas. That is not what you'll find here, regardless of what they tell you in your interview.
Feedback Loops: If you have a grievance to share, know that the 5 people making all the decisions that affect you are long time "friends" at work and home. There's not much you can say to one in confidence that won't run the risk of being re-packaged, politicized and spun to another member of leadership behind your back. During my time at ymarketing, I was not once asked how I was doing, in a general sense, by my manager. My manager repeatedly missed our weekly meetings for as long as 6 or 7 weeks at a time, excluded me from meetings I should be involved in and wondered, when there were issues, why I was having a difficult time being plugged in. Attempts to communicate through different methods fell on deaf ears.
Culture: When you hire someone, you make a decision to invite them to be a part of your office family in whatever form that takes. That's what the interview process is meant to help screen for - fit. If you get hired here, expect to have to put in a lot of effort to "get in with the right people". If you aren't perceived by leadership (or their favorite employees) as someone who fits in, sucks up enough, or they just decide they don't personally like you for one reason or another, your colleagues will be your only source sanity, and leadership will make you believe it's your fault for not "trying hard enough to be part of the family", as if it's something you need to prove. I would rate the leadership team's culture as highly toxic and dysfunctional.
Vision & Strategy: We had ONE "quarterly goals meeting" in a full year, where a few graphs and numbers were presented awkwardly without much context. If a vision or overarching strategy (ie: North Star for the company) exists, I've not seen it. There is a general breakdown of morale when teams don't feel part of the strategy or involved in conversations about the future of the company and how our work is impacting that. Expecting commitment, full buy-in, and dedication during busy/burnout/overtime season when you don't offer transparency around where we are and where we are going is a recipe for disaster and resentment.

- Culture fit is something you test for during the interview process, not as part of on-boarding.
- Stop telling people what your values are and start living them as an example to your teams.
- stop covering up larger culture and morale issues with happy hours and lunches. have a real conversation about what's working and what's not working (not a dumb survey). listen to anyone who has the cajones to tell the truth, and do something to resolve their issues to show you want them to keep doing that.
- enhance your recognition program. honor the people who are doing all the work by compensating them in a way that's meaningful to them.
- give your teams a chance to be involved in the long term strategy planning, they are much smarter than you give them credit for.
- stop favoring certain teams over the harder-working dev group. They are marginalized, ignored and dumped on, despite the fact they are producing almost all of your deliverables.

Amazing Company
|
|
First rate digital agencies are very hard to come by and ymarketing is a true gem. With philanthropy as one of its core values and digital media/analytics as a solid backbone, the agency is poised for a very bright future building upon its tremendous accomplishments. The culture enables for flexibility within due reason, a call for high quality output and the kitchen is always brimming with snacks. The impressive client portfolio (and spend) allows for more advanced techniques to be implemented as a standard. Professional development and advancement can easily stem from these opportunities.
|
With any agency experiencing success, growth creates gaps for processes and a common understanding for an ‘approach’ to certain tasks. In time, many of these issues can be easily resolved but upper management will need to guide more than explicitly dictate while still ensuring major pitfalls are avoided.

Create a better on boarding program for new employees. Don't just set up meetings to meet with departments that no one attends. If there is a known difficult learning curve even for someone with experience with industry and client field, maybe the sink or swim approach is not best.
Even when you do succeed it's quite stressful. After you fight to catch up to speed as everyone else you realize only then, that everyone else is only coasting through their jobs / responsibilities and leaving early.
I'm all for work life balance when the work gets done. But dumping all the stress and work on you biggest assets (developers) because of lack of management, attention to detail of other employees, and terrible project management is just cruel.

A rapidly growing agency with family values
|
|
Coming from my previous large agency, it was a nice change finding a company with less politics, that nurtures a family environment. YM feels more like a home in comparison. I have found the management team to be a great group of leaders and mentors. YM offers flexibility with work schedules as needed, which helps when life happens. There is plenty of opportunity for career growth. Those with great work ethic and a positive attitude are rewarded and appreciated. YM offers a great deal of perks and benefits such as quarterly chair massages, monthly catered birthday lunches, happy hour celebrations, life insurance, and flex spending, to name a few. The company is always coming up with fun, new ways for the employees to pay it forward and be active in the community. The people here genuinely like each other. It is easier to come to work everyday with a sense of family around you.
|
As a rapidly growing agency, we have outgrown our office space. It has become more difficult to book conference rooms for meetings, especially when scheduling last minute meetings. Work-life balance can be tough during the busy seasons, which is just the nature of the advertising business. It does help that they do offer schedule flexibility, such as working from home when needed. The paternity/maternity leave policy could use some updates to mirror what a lot of other agencies/clients/vendors in our industry are doing.

I would recommend the next office space to have a designated private nursing mother room with a sink and small fridge. This is a nice perk my last agency had. They do however, offer a couple of private conference rooms with locks, which is great, but these are sometimes booked up.

An Agency Not Like The Rest
|
|
In the media world, it appears that media shops are a dime-a-dozen these days, each offering their own unique selling points. When I set out looking to make a shift in my career, there were a few items that I made a priority in my next "work home": a work-life balance, a moral compass, industry excellence, and to be surrounded by people that I actually enjoy spending 40 hours a week with. Luckily, and I'd like to emphasize "luckily", I found these traits when starting at ymarketing. While ymarketing is not only filled with some of the most talented and forward-thinking individuals within the industry, ymarketing is home to some of the most caring, passionate, and enjoyable people you can come across. Whether this is demonstrated by ymarketing being named Bing's Agency of the Year (2016)(this one I am really proud of), employees heading out of the office on Wednesdays to help feed children at Boys and Girls Clubs around Orange County, or having many drinks with coworkers after a productive (sometimes exhausting) day, ymarketing is truly an agency that I am proud to call my "work home". After 2+ years this sentiment still rings true and I would recommend this agency to anyone looking to learn a great deal about any facet of digital media, having a good time and making a difference in the process.
